    where will it end?

    in this area within a couple of kilometers of my little shoppe

    we have

    RT Edwards
    JB HiFi
    The Good Guys
    Woolworths (2 of) soon to be 3
    Office Works
    Dick Smith (2 of)
    Clive Peters
    Harvey Norman
    Joyce Maine
    Aldi
    Jaycar
    Kmart
    Coles

    and 5 local computer shops similar to mine

    has me wondering

    when does it reach saturation point?

    and what happens when it does?

    You start googling combinations of words like "Todger" and "eel"...

    What I find strange is all the doom and gloom re Internet shopping killing retail while at the same time the majors and minors are opening new stores.

    Inc, your story is similar to us. When I started in the building automation game in 1990 we had 4 competitors, in 2007 when I joined some mates in a small private business in the same industry we had 8 competitors. Now we have 25 !

    Actually big fella this is a question that is starting toplay on my mind. It's one of the reasons why I want to do FIFO work to get away from civilisation. I'm even chasing up leads in Africa, still doesn't help where to live where I have room to move, know my neighbours and plenty of room to 4wd and fish

    been pondering myself as things are really slowing down in this part of the world to the point even the local maccas is whinging.

    if it gets much quieter than it is now i will be thinking about putting myself back on the tools and looking for some shutdown work till it improves.

    so if anyone needs a fitter welder mechanic ......

    a decent days work would probably kill me tho

    This has already gutted the specialty photographic retailers and photolabs.

    The six local shops will get lots of people who:

    want to pick your brains before they buy;
    will have problems that the retailers can't or won't help them with and want to pick your brains or get free advice;

    and many of your previous customers will desert you to buy the goods but will call you expecting help on the weekend because they are one of your "good" customers;

    But -
    seeing there are more goods being sold to more users you might pick up increased work when something goes wrong with their purchases. That pre-supposes the goods don't get so cheap they will throw them away - like printers for instance - where the whole deal is cheaper than the consumable ink cartridges!!

    Maybe you could specialise in data recovery.

    If we keep going like this, many small business owners will spit the dummy, close shop move to the country and have a simple and healthy life.

    Just remember that all the big businesses were once small business's too and each one started with one store. That said now that they are big they do whatever it takes to stay big.

    Being unique and offering something that the competition doesn't is the key.

    As for saturation my small little town of Gracemere with about 10 000 or so residents and only 5 minutes drive from Rockhampton is about to get its first shopping centre complete with woolies and woolies petrol, maccas, red rooster and a few other big name stores. Most people will still have to go into Rocky each day for work and I really dont see the point of it all but I guess it is there for future growth due to all the new housing estates shooting up everywhere.

    There is no economic downturn in central Qld, not with China's money to spend.
