    Green Change

    Ok,
    Riddle me this?
On one of the current affairs shows tonight, they again featured a small country town (name not important) and how this town was saving itself by getting folk to live there by offering cheap rent.
My question is .....how do all the folk who move to these country towns actually earn a crust?
I mean, even with cheap/free rent you still need a few hundred tokens to even live. I would love to move to a groovy country town, but how would I feed my family? I am not on a bad wage, but even with a vege garden and chooks and bartering the odd pig, I still reckon I'd be quite a few thousand clams short.

Anyone shed any light on this?

It depends on what work skills you have and what the industry and demographic of the town/region is.

I suspect the town you mention is very small, probably in an agricultural region and relies on primary industry. The good news is that there is heaps of work on farms; the not so good news is that wages and hours don't always appeal but at least it is work and I find living in the country very relaxing compared to cities.

Real estate is often very cheap and anyone with trade-skills will find it very easy to find employment,

    Cheers Charlie

I suspected as much, which makes my particular skill set next to worthless in the country - I am a maintenance and reliability engineer, currently managing a workshop.
Maybe I could shovel cow doo for a living.

Have to look for a new vocation as well.

The name of the country town probably is important. There are heaps of small country towns up here in Qld within cooee of the rampaging industrial activity that is happening. Ver y few of them cater to the mining industrials and so plenty of cheap housing is available if one looks.

Yes, but they need people to do the maintenance, not procrastinate about it

In all honesty, if I couldn't earn $1000 cash a week within 10kms of home with all the farms id give up on life, it depends on your skillset and willingness to put in

Not during harvestin time or just before it
Thirty years ago I left John Deere and if I like I can have a job in the spot now even if I am 65+
It was harder to find customers who like to do preventative maintenance in CNC and NC machine tolls. The money in company cars is more important for them
