    Coffs Harbour 4wding and camping

    Hi all,

I was just wondering if anyone had some recommendations on 4wding and camping spots within 2 hours of Coffs Harbour. We have just settled here from Melbourne so have no idea where to go and what to see (no friends).

Hopefully a good mix of bush and beach with 4wding in between.

    Thanks in advance

    Adam

I'm sure you'll get a great response from our friends in Coffs.
Couple of years ago we caught up with the crew from there for one of the best weekends of driving socialising we've ever had offroad. You now live on the doorstep of some of the most awesome and scary tracks in the country I reckon
Hopefully get back up there next year, hope to catch up with you and the rest of the crew again.

That sounds like alot of fun. It's always a better time with a few people for encouragement/repairs/towing...

    See you then

Get a State Forests map of the Eastern Dorrigo. I particularly recommend Platypus Flat, where the whitewater canoists go in. Lovely camping spot on the Nymboida River.

I second the Nymboida River there are some fantastic camping spots, fresh water with rapids, heaps of fun for the family. Another great spot is 'Neil and sue winters' The Gorge, beautiful spot, fantastic base fishing, rapids, and there are all the waterfalls at the gorge.
They are a couple of my favs, have fun.

    Welcome to Coffs!

There is a heap of great local camping... I go away most weekends and just leave after work, usually set up by dark.

Your best bet is just to grab some 1:25k topo maps, pick a route and see if you can get there. If you can't, there is usually a side route pretty close by.

Here's some of my suggestions to get you started though:

Station Creek is about 30 mins north of Coffs in Yuraygir NP. Easy beach driving, creek crossing (check the tides!!), rock pools, fishing and very pretty. Gets busy in summer.

Styx River State Forest is west towards Armidale, about 90 mins. Easy tracks, quiet camp spots, trout & bass fishing.

You've also got West Kunderang in the same vicinity as Styx River SF - pricey but very relaxing, perfect spot on the river and a bit more comfortable. I go every Christmas I love it so much. Great Bass fishing!

And of course Platypus Flats - I think everyone loves Platypus Flats! All of Nymboi - Binderay NP / Chaelundi NP is fab though.

And if you are after a day trip just to have a poke around - Lower Bucca State Forest. I'd come out with you this weekend or next weekend but I've got previous plans

I joined the 4WD club when I got to Coffs. Fabulous group of like minded people, got me in touch with good contacts, and safety in numbers! I took a few years off from it but I'm back in the fold now. And if you are after a good mechanic - not sure if I can do this here, so won't mention names, but have a drive down to HiTech Drive in Toormina.... Best 4x4 mechanic you'll find.

Ps. Please excuse the shots of the dog - she'll get her mug into anything

I am guessing he is talking about Coffs Harbour 4WD Centre, I have bought parts from them and the service has always been good.

Must be ok to mention names then!

Yep, was referring to Coffs 4WD Centre - I'm happy to be able to give them a little bit of a shout out because I've always found them fabulous and good service can be a bit hard to find in Coffs.

They do a fantastic job, quickly and when they said they would, and for the price they quoted. Bit more speno than the others but really, really worth it for the money.

All the blokes there are heavily into 4WD's and the owner has a serious Landy addiction which always helps. Just down to earth guys really. Check out their website if you're bored. And I've noticed a lot of the trucks that they modified are on The Offroad Show podcasts.

Sorry to hack your thread Sven!

Maybe we could run a Coffs AULRO trip in December??

With some luck I might be able to make that. It will give me a good excuse to get away for some camping.
