Who is a sparky who works at a power station?
Just asking as im going to go for a job at a gas fired power station in victoria. I currently work in BHP at porthedland in the port and am thinking of trying to get closer to home (Geelong). Iam a HV level 2 switcher. (switch up to 66KV and can create and switch switching programs in radial and ring systems. I dont have a great deal of transformer or network systems as i am a breakdown sparky forthe port. we have a seprate team that deals with power retic.
Just wondering what is involved and if it would be a good job?
Ahhh - A long time ago, in a seemingly different life, I worked in Power Stations at the SEC. Worked at Hazelwood, Morwell & Loy Yang, and I used to like it. Just general maintenance work, but did work on the Plant Life Extension on unit 2 (Turbine Gang) at Hazelwood in '88 when I was just a young lad (1st year apprentice).
I didn't do any HV stuff though, only servicing the odd OCB for the 6.6KV motors around the place.
Preferred the open cuts, but Power Stations were fun - got a tour around the Port Augusta Power Station a few months back - bought back some good memories, and a few not so good ones (cleaning the precipitators - yuck)
Cheers - Gav
