    Redundancy package

Parliamentarians who have served more than one term will now get more than $70,000 - six months' pay - to see them through the difficulty of losing their job.

Bloody politicians are all the same
I just wonder how many politicians are going to against this proposal bt the Remuneration Tribunal

Just remember most of these guys will have gone straight from uni to working as a staffer for the local pollie then local council as a counciler(junior training scheme) then state or fed politian, so they have never had to work in a real job before so they will need the cash

They may have done all this, but to get pre-selection they had to at least serve some time in their electorates or at state level and then re-locate to Canberra now they are jobless a part of the redundancy package is the re-location back to their home.

If you work in the mining industry (outside the fly in fly out), you get a relocation to move to the site and I'll bet they get relocation allowance within any redundancy package.

Most people who are made redundant, never moved out of their home to get the job and when they are made redundant shouldn't get a relocation allowance. Although one would wonder how much Wridgeways or Grace Removals, would get out of the pollies redundancy payment.

Also we have to remember that it could leap to $125,000 if politicians get a much-anticipated pay rise next year,

So that is another $50000 to cover the "inflation" in the relocation cost in one year.

I thought "redundancy" was when the job you have ceases to exist.... not that you lose it!
The rules for making a position redundant are VERY specific, you can't replace that person for 6 months etc etc. How does losing your seat because you or your party are incompetent fit with redundancy.... SOMEONE will fill the seat immediately after the election..
As to the 'relocation expense' argument, going into politics is suposed to be a vocation, something you feel you have to do to make a difference TO / FOR OTHERS, at least that was what I was brought up to believe. nobody MAKES that choice for you.
Australia is no longer the Land of the Long Weekend.... it's now the land of compensation and tax payer funded payouts.

These are not for one term wonders these are for members who have served more than one term. You may have worked very hard for your electorate for two or more terms, but may be subject to a electorate boundary redistribution that changed the nature of the electorate from one party to the other and you then lost at an election. So in essence your seat (as it was) ceased to exist and you became redundant for no fault of your own or your party may still have won the election. Should we ask people to pay their own expenses to move to and away from Canberra?

Not that I agree with all the payouts the pollies get, however as far as I can see these elected officials work a lot more than a 5 day 35 hour and actually earn less than the public service heads of the departments the pollies are responsible for. And you would be aware that the excessive tax free pensions the pollies used to get have been reined in significantly.

I dunno whether I should bite or not......ok, I will.

I have met a few pollies over the years. Yes they aren't always the most exciting people and I certainly dont always agree with their point of view.

But I reckon most work damn hard. 12 hour days minimum, lots of time away from their family, opening the school fete with a big cheesy smile, off to the bowls club, off to parliment, off to the old peoples home, rallying support, etc etc etc.

Then at home, it's late night phone calls, early mornings (4am) to get to the airport.

Bloody hard work and I reckon most earn their wage.

You do realise the pollies don't vote on their own salary and packages don't you?
Their salaries are now determined by a tribunal, a court of law, not unlike the Industrial Relations Commission we used to have and it is the same tribunal that sets the salaries of senior public servants. And no it is not controlled by the Labor Government.

Just try to live in a country where public servants decide how the country runs (the one party state, like China, Stalinist/Soviet Russia, and any number of other one party states) if they decide the country needs something or can do away with something else, they just write a regulation and it happens. Be it a new road, close a hospital and add a new tax and there is no comeback and no ability to vote them out "next time", you may not even be able to leave as it is they who issue the passports and control the borders.

A politician is motivated to do enough to keep the electorate happy and get re-elected, more than that they have the power to control the public service (apart from the NSW RTA who are a law unto themselves). Considering all of that, I say they do a lot and if it is only going around kissing babies and shaking hands it is keeping them busy until we can decide whom will be our dictators for the next 3 years.
