Some people should not be let loose to work on stuff

Here are a few posts from another (motorbike) forum I frequent:

I cleaned off all the excess and assumed it wouldn't effect things too much, or at least that it would just burn off... I took the bike out for a spin around the neighborhood and pretty quickly found new appreciation for STOPPING... my breaks were worthless.

I wiped them again... I think they're a little better. Am I safe to assume that with a little use that oil will wear/burn off?

On they bright side, they look beautiful

And from a bike mechanic about his customers:

Transportation: I can't recall how many times a bike has arrived in my parking lot lying on it's side in the back of an expensive SUV or van leaking fluids everywhere. A couple made it here jammed into a car trunk. Some have arrived strapped together in bunches of 2 or 3 all scratched to **** from rubbing against each other.

Fasteners: A guy had a Harley Ultra in a trailer and needed his shift lever adjusted. I told him to remove the bolt and slide the shifter off the splined shaft and adjust it. He asked me what a bolt was.

Gaskets: 2 weeks ago a guy walks in carrying the round head gasket off a 1978 Yamaha DT125. At least an inch of the gasket was missing entirely. He wondered if this might cause his bike to not run right and if it could be repaired instead of having to buy the $8.95 new top-end gasket set. The above questions were asked at least 5 times before the wallet was opened.

Then there was the guy that needed a new valve stem installed as his was broken and wouldn't take air. Turns out he was trying to put air in the rim lock stud on his old KZ.

He said he was trying to get it to run better by tapping on the carbs and when it started running better he got excited (his words) and tapped too hard and drove the screwdriver he was tapping on through the carb bowl. I can't make this **** up.

WTF? the guy is getting ****ed because she won't give him any old brake pads and angrily tells her "it's yellow!"... like that's helpful! Finally she goes out to the parking lot (minus 20, and a foot of snow) to look at the car. Sure enough, yellow Lada Niva. She tells him that you can't get parts for it, they are disposable vehicles, like a Bic lighter. whenever we get frustrated with each other now, we just yell "it's yellow!" and that breaks the mood.

I mentioned this to him when he came to pick it up today and asked what kind of oil he had in the bike. He said "Yeah, it's been like that since new and I've never changed the oil." I thought he joking. He wasn't.

He said the oil was never changed because the dealer he bought it from in 1999 closed it's doors. I went to the auction at that dealership when they closed shop in 2004 so that was 5 years later.... anyway, I told him he didn't need to go to a Suzuki dealer to get the oil changed and I got a blank stare. He did buy some oil and a filter though.

I don't suppose I have to tell you guys how much air was in the tires, do I?

i have had a customer complain that ever since we did a full service on his Prado (including diff fluids) the rear wheels skip while turning.... turned out he put the shifter into High range 4wd with rear diff lock engaged, and the light on the dash was off.

also had an Xtrail today that the customer was complaining it wasnt acting normally. took it out of locked 4wd and put it into 2wd, and it was perfectly fine.

i have found that its easier to fix issues like that, and plug in the scan tool and tell the customer that we reset all the parameters in the ECU. that way i dont have to discuss their intelligence, and wether or not they should have a liscence.

I was looking for your thread to append these - but I couldn't remember who posted the stories.

Had a bloke drive into our service station one day (back when we used to check the oil and tyres), as I was about to check his tyre pressure I asked "how much air do you want in your tyres", "don't know" he said, "just fill them up", no wucking furries.

Another time I was putting a quart of oil in this Mercedes and the driver who was standing next to me, looked over my shoulder into the oil filler hole in the rocker cover, where you could see the oil pooled up waiting to drain into the sump and he said quite earnestly, "that should do it's full now".

This one about an apprentice mechanic who was doing some driveway service, I noticed he was laying flat on the ground while putting some air in a customer's tyre, I asked why he was laying down, he came back with " the tyre valve is at the bottom of the tyre", Regards Frank.

    Those are great Ron!

I've had earnest and panicky phone calls from customers who have had no drive only to discover that one of the kids has knocked the hi lo shifter into neutral, and 1 that has rung the RAC an hour earlier and was witing for the tow truck after a non start episode (D1 auto) and I asked gently whether the shifter wasn't in D or R.....a few seconds later I heard over the phone the glorious sounds of a Tdi fire into life... could almost feel the face plant on the other end of the line.

I have heaps more but no time at the moment to type. Got to get into the work now.

    JC
