Well, Super Retail Group has now bought Rebel Sport..... that means that Super cheap, BCF, Gold Cross Cycles, Rebel Sport and Rays Outdoors are all one company.
Looks like a strategy to corner a major share of the leisure market is well and truly underway.
Of course, there will be no disadvantage to we ordinary folk as one company gets to control the pricing and choice we have will there?
Why is it that in Australia monopolies are allowed to grow and thrive when in other countries they protect the consumers from this type of domination?

Therein lies the problem Rambling boy, there are very few alternatives left, I'd support them if they were there believe me. Hence, the monopoly wins.

There is simple document available called the AusBuy Guide which offers alternatives to all the monopoly brands and companies. You can download it simply.
I posted reviously about Dick smith buying and saving a farmers beetroot crop and then getting his canning contactor to can the crop, but it is a total waste on his behalf if the public dont support and buy the Dick Smith brand instead of the normal shelf products. rant rant rant
I share your concerns... the reality is that most of the acquired businesses were set up originally as small businesses (e.g Supercheap) and grew and grew... what happens then is that they reach a critical mass and if they can't keep growing they stagnate and fail...
So someone comes along and says...if we put these together we can save on backroom costs, get economies of scale and spread the risk...
The holding company is listed on the Australian Stock Exchange so if you want it to stay in Australian hands,,,buy shares and don't sell to o'seas buyers...
Woolworths have numerous brands ... as do most of the insurance companies... Toll logistics at one stage in the late 80s was buying out over a dozen small transport companies a month in order to attain critical mass...
The cruncher is that this is the price we pay for having too small a population for a nation wanting to play in a global economy. Unless we have firms which are large enough to take on the global giants in our own backyard we will be in a worse position.

co-operatives are the way to compete. most of our dairy farmers were once in co-ops but they sold out to big overseas companies who now choke them to keep their product on the supermarket shelf. the supermarkets choke the large supply companies, who in turn choke the growers. I hope it all collapses.....
Well mate I certainly hope it doesn't all collapse! If that were to happen then our problems would be far worse than those we all ready have. I hate seeing the monopolies grow but at the same time, I am in favour of a free market economy... it's not quite the contradiction in terms that it first appears.
I'm a small business owner and without the free market we have, I wouldn;t exist.
All I would like to see is that these things are reviewed in a proper fashion. It's now way too late for the majot 'Duopoly' in this country to be dismantled so I guess we have to live with it but let's recognise that compettion is a "No" word to these big players.

Just as an aside..... it's interesting that as soon as there is a way around the Australian distributors... ie a "Group Buy" which generally means an overseas buy, everyone jumps aboard, myself included.
I guess we are are own worst enemy.

Rebel lost 300 million bucks over the last few years. There will be a lot of people at Silverwater NSW crapping themselves about their jobs since head office is now in QLD. It's not like the staff can trade on their performance? Rebel screw the wholesalers down pretty tight when buying their stock but still can't turn a profit. No wonder it's tight for small operators if the big boys are struggling.
