thanks for the offer, but I'm going with solar panels when I get to melbourne. I need to do the initial charge on my replacement hot water system, which takes 8 hours, hence the neefs for overnight power.

btw, I replaced my 2 cranking batteries yesterday. 1 of the dud batteries was showing 4V!

Make sure you have long power leads so you put your solar panels out in the sun and keep yourself in the shade. Come across the new CTEK D250S Dual DC to DC battery charger 20A. It has a built in Solar Regulator so you can plug Solar panels directly into it, which negates having to buy a reulator for the solar panels. Retails for around $370, will be getting my self one, Regards Frank.

I've been thinking of using one of these, but there's still debates about whether they're necessary/beneficial for charging auxilliary batteries (just ask Drivesafe!). A few auto-elec types have recommended them, but I still see negative comments. Makes it hard for an electronics numpty like me to decide

Also, I read a review in a magazine somewhere (maybe the one I borrowed off you?) about a new model on the market, that does DC to DC, is a solar regulator, but also does 240V to DC. Can't seem to find a model/maker anywhere though.

Well you already have a 240V to DC, the good thing about the CTEK dual is that if you buy Solar panels you usually need to buy a regulator which can cost a few hundred dollars, the CTEK 250S dual has a built in Solar regulator. As you know most of the argument seems to be whether a DC to DC charger is quicker (or not) than the Alternator on the car. I have noticed over time that it takes a lot longer to charge up a Deep Cylce battery and if you don't drive continously four several hours then they don't get a full charge. Fro $370 (approx.) you get a DC to DC charger and a Solar reg. in one unit, I priced a similar Redarc unit and it was nearly $600 and another was $1500, anyway it's something to consider. I didn't show you my Genny did I, it's a clone of the Honda 1000 W, nice and quiet too, around $375, Regards Frank.

Yeh, my CTEK 15000 is great for 240V, but I'd like to be able to carry only 1 charger if possible.

I've avoided a genny, as it would be another motor for me to maintain, I'd need to carry petrol, and I simply don't have the room!

I reckon with the new batteries, and a couple of well mounted or portable panels, I'd be sorted.
