    Thumbs down 4wd Action on D2 TD5

    Has anyone read the used vehicle report in the latest 4wd Action on the D2 TD5?
    Talk about a biased report, just focusing on problem after problem...... most of which, like turbo failure could happen on any vehicle with a turbo.
    I've finally had enough and won't be renewing my subscription.

    Far be it for me to contradict a master, but as a newbie D2a TD5 auto owner, I found the article interesting and even slightly useful as a collation tool (I have been drawing together ever comment on D2s I can from this brilliant site/personages. Maybe after a career in IR I have been de-sensitised to negativity?

    I enjoy reading the magazine and watching the included DVD's, but after reading that article it made me hesitant to look at the Disco 2 and TD5 as a future option over my Disco 1. I always thought that they were far superior to the 200/300 Tdi's and according to the article they were but should have received more field testing to ensure reliability.

    Problems listed by the 4WD Action article for those who have yet to read it:
    * Injector failure;
    * Turbo failure;
    * Cracked warped head, cylinder bore or blown piston;
    * Faulty radiator coolant hoses, pressure tank and thermostat;
    * Centrifugal oil filter and lubrication system.

    The article does say that by 2003 most of these issues had been rectified, but yikes

    Don't read that one myself but I do subscribe to another car magazine.
    What I have found, whenever they do a feature on Fords, the following issue letters to the editor section is filled with Holden fans claiming "I'm cancelling my subscription due to your magazines bias to Ford."
    Whenever they do a feature on Holdens, the following issue letters to the editor section is filled with Ford fans claiming "I'm cancelling my subscription due to your magazines bias to Holden."
    Swings and roundabouts.
    Just turn to the next page and read on.

    if you wrote up the things that have "gone wrong" with my disco you wouldnt buy one either....but correct me if they are not fairly normal automotive failures.
    fuel pump replaced
    fuel pressure regulator replaced
    I'm on my third fan belt
    alternator overhauled
    bearings in fan belt tension roller and idler
    harmonic balancer replaced
    cooling system completely renewed
    all cooling hoses replaced at least once
    front cardan joint/unis replaced
    on 4th set of tyres
    transmission oil cooler hoses replaced
    headlamp combo switch replaced
    .....now I'm not sure if that list is too much in 250,000km, but from what I'm hearing around here about toymotas I'm having a perfect run. I guess it all comes down to how an article is written, beaten up by media and conceived by the reader.

    Problems listed by the 4WD Action article for those who have yet to read it:
    * Injector failure; * Rare as Rocking Horse....
    * Turbo failure;* Can happen to any turbo vehicle - but actually rare on TD5s
    * Cracked warped head, cylinder bore or blown piston;* Very, Very rare - Almost always a coolant loss problem - Only seen 1 case of Bore / Piston damage
    * Faulty radiator coolant hoses, pressure tank and thermostat;* What a load of rubbish - less common than on Land Cruisers
    * Centrifugal oil filter and lubrication system.* Only causes issues due to damage from heavy handed 'mechanics' stripping threads or poor aftermarket filters used. System is superior to filtration on any other marque

    The article does say that by 2003 most of these issues had been rectified, but yikes
    I will be communicating my displeasure to the editor very shortly...

    I am not amused by poor sensationalist journalism....

    I agree with Tombies comments.
    I personally only know of 1 total turbo failure and a couple of others that have been rebuilt due to wear. Wear is normal and happens with any turbo or for that matter any mechanical component.
    Injector failure - as said pretty rare but does happen, look at any vehicle that runs an injection system.
    Rarely heard of piston damage or bore damage.
    Cracked heads, yes does happen but usually through coolant loss. Geez known of many many vehicles that have had this occur.
    Faulty hoses WTF, they are perishable items.
    Pressure tank issues are usually related to other issues.
    Centrifuge filter is a great system and many people put affter market systems on their vehicles to match this. Yes the bolt system could have been a bit better, but it is by no means bad.
    Toyota based journalism at its best. All makes of vehicles have the sorts of problems mentioned.
    These failures do occur but are not common as they would like you to believe.
