32 inches (800mm) in dia.. And that is with a 'Camel cut' at the rear. (Google it - it's a popular modification). Any wider and you get problems during articulation - although I've had 265/70 and it wasn't too bad. 235/85 seems to be a good for most things (which I have now) The 7 inch Disco rim can handle 265 wide but after that things get a little iffy.

    Welcome to the forum slowrover.

There are MANY threads here on what size tyres you can run on a D1, and the associated mods that you need or dont need to do it. Hit the search button and go sick reading for hours

You dont need huge tyres to start getting off road in a D1. Standard road tyres will go heaps of places - definitely enough to get you started so don't hold off waiting for new tyres. Just be prepared to let some air out of them (and be able to pump them back up to get home), You will be lacking a bit of ground clearance and will have to think a bit more about where you put your wheels, but they will still go LOTS of places.

I ran 245/75's on my D1 with a 2" lift and a small camel cut to the rear guard. Definitely not the biggest size possible, but had no drama's with rubbing etc, and wouldn't have wanted to go any bigger without a lot of mods as it was a 300tdi auto, so the bigger tyres slowed it up quite a bit in regards to getting moving (especially when towing).

The bigger tyres you run, the more likely you are to break stuff like axles and diffs etc, so make sure you know what you're getting yourself in for with the size you choose.
