    Red Tape anyone?

Interesting item just now on the Rural Report (ABC local radio). A farmer about 110km out of Bourke got a fuel delivery yesterday. "Sorry, could not bring you any unleaded, only diesel - the new truck can only carry diesel".

This farmer says he can store 3000l diesel and 2000l petrol, the latter being used for pumps, motorbikes and one vehicle. He says the only fuel agent (Caltex) in Bourke will not fill (or deliver) 200l drums of petrol, so there appears to be no way he can easily solve this problem.

With a flood warning now in place, he faces being cut off for possibly weeks. Caltex was not prepared to comment, but it seems to me that it is likely that they are constrained by red tape that might make sense in Sydney, but rather less sense bock of Bourke.

    Hmm, interesting John.

We used to get a BP delivery, but again, only diesel when on the farm.

The few small engines that ran petrol, a few pumps, saws, whipper snippers, etc we just used 20l jerry cans.

If this comes from Sydney (OH&S or somesuch) I can see a lot of larger properties screaming, theres a few not too far from here up around the 45,000 acre mark and it'd be a 40km or so run into town to fill up some 44's.

I think the key point is that in this case Caltex will not fill 44s. In the Hunter you probably have multiple suppliers and can find one who will (even if it is illegal!). The situation is amplified on a later news broadcast - the inability to supply bulk petrol is due to a broken down truck, the replacement being diesel only. The problem is likely to get worse as fewer and fewer farms get bulk petrol - most only use it for pumps, bikes etc, but the quantities used and the cost of storing large quantities mean they just get a few jerricans - unless it is a big operation a long way out of town. And as fewer and fewer get bulk petrol, it will cease to be worth companies handling it. With a ban on filling 44s, what are those few going to do?

Fit a long range fuel tank to a petrol powered vehicle. Fill it up then transfer to drums once back home.

The man on the news item has a 2,000l petrol storage. That is a lot of trips to town!

So how do they deliver JetA1 or AvTur to the stations, or do NSW stations only muster on horseback?!

I suspect it is in drums - filled at the refinery to ensure freedom from contamination.

The problem I suspect is that you cannot legally fill a container on a vehicle - it must be on the ground. A bit of a nuisance, but practical for jerricans, but if you don't have a hoist, not really practical for 44s.

Dave, Ack, but the issue seems to be the containers. Haven't seen a jet/ Tur tanker veh outside a permanent (or used in ex) medium airfield, and I've been on some bloody big stations up north.
