Have a look how a 3 door stood up to a severe accident.
I believe the driver may have not been so lucky in a lesser vehicle.

Judging by the skidmarks left on the road,he didnt wash off much speed before hitting the pipeline.Its around 4 feet in diameter,full of water,just like hitting a block of concreate.

Actually the occupants are lucky - the D1s, particularly in non airbag form had a poor crash rating - even for the time when they were new.
I had an early 94 D1 without airbags when they were crash tested (I think in 95) - they were not well rated and in a decent frontal crash you could expect to loose your legs below the knee.
