What sort of sizes are you after?
Try a sheet metal fabrication shop. There must be a few around out your way.
Hi all,
I'm after some scrap steel for a few Rangie add-ons. I've looked at a bunch of local scrap steel websites, but they only talk about buying it... I want a yard where i can grab some bits and be charged by the tonne.
Do all these places do this, or do they keep it all for themselves? Obviously, i would expect to pay more for the steel than what they are buying it for
My workplace has a few piles of scrap steel (ideal!), but just not enough (or big enough pieces) for what i want.
Anyone else have a workplace that has scrap steel available.
Any ideas?
I'm in Melbourne's outer east, but others may be interested in other states.
Thanks in advance.
Pete.

Probably wouldn't know until i picked it up!
Some round tube for sliders and bar work, something to make a rear bar, that sort of stuff.
Unfortunatley, i never seem to find time to trek around or even call around places. Not enough hours in the day!
Cheers.
Do you have recycling centres at your local dumps?
I recently bought a pair of steel side steps for $5 each and modified them to fit the disco.

Just go to your local toyota dealer, plenty of scrap on the forecourt![]()

I tried Metal Mart but they only want to supply lengths or sheets, no offcuts.
I then tried Hertzog Steel a local company in Canberra that supplies both trade, wholesale and retail steel - they let you go and rumage in their bins and will cut for free - they charge by weight but the profile also comes into it.
I am sure you will have a similar supplier near you - look in the Yellow Pages under Steel.

There is no such thing as scrap steel!
Just ask anyone in the industry, there are full sheets or full lengths and off-cuts, the only thing that is scrap is swarf.
As others have said, find a local fabrication shop and go in there with a few notes cash in your pocket.
Remember they have to pay for the steel and get paid by the Kg for the offcuts they send away in the metal skip bin, so getting "scrap" prices from you is cash in their pocket today.
You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
Pete,
Dandy Steel Sales in Dandenong will sell offcuts as well as full lengths of steel. They will sell shorter lengths but only if they feel they can easily sell the remainder.
Small company, good prices and cheaper if you are paying cash
They are on the Princes Hwy (in a service road) opposite where the South Gippsland Hwy joins.
