    custom number plates?

    Hi everyone!

Being new to Australia and not being able to find the answer online I thought you might be able to answer this simple question regarding number plates.

Is it possible / legal to have a 'square' number plate on the back of your defender?
Apart from it looking silly, I think it's unpractical having a bit of number plate sticking out the back and surely many have lost theirs in the bush...

    Cheers

You don't have to tell us you're a Pommy!

We already know asking for a Pommy shaped tag for a Pommy shaped car, how rediculous is that!

In NSW the lucky ones of us who have 2 letter, 3 digit plates, can just fit them in the correct place on a Series or Defender Land Rover. But I'm not sure that's an option in Vic.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Are you suggesting making up your own 'square' plate similar to a UK plate instead of using the rectangular plates that we are issued with?

Have you thought about a personalised plate? While they are an additional cost, they come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

I'm located in the ACT and we have to accept the plates we are issued with - kinda dumb when it comes to trailer plates as they are still the same size as the standard plate and are far to large for most trailers however......as long as they are illuminated and not obstructed, you can place them just about anywhere you like on the rear of the vehicle!

    Thanks for all the replies!

I don't really want a custom plate - I'd much rather spend that cash on a few trips or nice accessories.

    Instead of having
    MYN 456

    Have it
    MYN
    456

But it seems that due to limitations to number plate recognisioning it may not be possible / legal. (I'll let you know once I get an official answer from vicroads)

HEHEHE! Not only am I made fun of for buying a Landy in Toyota / Nissan country, but also where I come from ;-) (Not sure I have to admit that this one was made in South Africa and spent the last decade in England before moving Downunder...)

    Short answer, no.
Vicroads do not currently offer it in that size and legally you can't make your own.
Hasn't stopped people making their own though.
Try it and let us know how you go. If it's unreadable the boys in blue won't be very happy, if there is nothing to attract their attention, they just might not bother.
Keep the original plate with you and, if the authorities question you about it, change it over there and then. You might just get away with it.

There's been constant progress at a national level towards harmonising Fed and State laws on all sorts of 'transport'-related issues. Speed limits, reciprocal licence demerit points design regs... the list goes on. Number plates seem to have proliferated in all sorts of shapes and sizes... but the data is all on one line...
I seem to recall that around the time of the bicentennial (1988 FYI) NSW released a plate which was of the "square" variety with a coat of arms and other fancy stuff and perhaps 2 lines of alpha-numerics. I have not seen any others.

I suspect the number recognition idea you mentioned is a practical factor...can machines read two lines of data?
