    Td5 fuel economy in Simpson

Anyone taken a Td5 Defender across the Simpson? What sort of fuel economy can I expect? I'm thinking of allowing 20l/100km (plus a reserve). Worst it has ever done is 15, towing a heavy camper trailer in a 30kt headwind on the road. Is this being too optimistic? Haven't done a long desert trip in this one.

Mine used 75 litres from Birdsville to Mount Dare heading east west on the french line in what was pretty soft sand. 2nd gear high range basically all the way.

    I took 200 litres!

That should give you a pretty good safety margin.

On a Madigan crossing a few years ago my Td5 used about 17l/hundred. And some of that was cross country. It used 165 litres for around 930 k's travelled and I had 220 litres on board.

I suppose it depends a bit on which route you will be taking across the Simpson.

i crossed via the rig road and at a guess used slightly less fuel even though the distance was longer than say the french line.........less soft sand as the was quite a bit of clay? top
