Slash it before it goes to seed, if it's a big area.

What can I use or make that will sterilize the dirt? Simazine? Glyphosate sucks, it's a very large area in total with driveway and future drive it takes literally a day to poison and I can't keep up trying to get all the seed, I want to kill it in the ground

Simazine mixed with with glysophate is pretty good. Glysophate kills the stuff that is currently growing, and simazine will prevent future germination for a number of months.
many years ago my father sprayed behind the garage to kill the weeds, during the night it rained causing it to spread to 1/4 of the vege garden lucky we had two, nothing grew on the affected soil for well over ten years.
At a guess I would say it is now illegal to use it as this happened at the beginnings of the 70's it was something he "borrowed" from work.

Smazine is a pre emergent so it will stop sprouting seeds from developing into plants by attacking their roots. In wet conditions it can be taken up by desirable plant roots nearby, so beware. you probably need to use a knockdown (Glyphosate), then simazine. If I remember correctly, simazine works better on tilled ground. I'm no expert. A call to someone like Elders and a talk to one of their Ag scientists might be a good idea.

What are you trying to get rid of Matt ?
There are several herbicides that use a residual in with the main active, eg Grazon uses Picloram as a residual.
Can you borrow a boom spray from someone ?
A goat. Pat
you cant sterilize the soil permanently , you can spray with something like ronstar but that will only last about 3 months , weed seeds blow in daily so you have to keep on spraying . weed killers wont sterilize the soil . if you dont want to use chemicals you can cover the area with plastic sheet in summer like with 30+ days for a period of 10 days that will sterilize the soil then you will have to spray with something like ronstar
I'm in the same boat here. I'm sick of spraying and even when I have my weeds under control they blow in from next door. I'm saving up this year to have it asphalted. Cost more initially but I will get more time back to relax (if that possible).
Another thing that might be worth looking into is some type of oil. The roads around my friends place in Devon Meadows are oiled by the council to keep dust and weeds down. Not sure what type of oil it is or how environmentally friendly it is though.
Cheers, David.
