    Costly wind?

Towing the van today, the fuel economy jumped from it's usual 15L/100km to 18L/100km.

Conditions were as per normal, except for a pretty strong side-wind. Would this be enough to cause the difference?

After 6 weeks in Tassie without the van, I can't wait to move it on after I get home. Sure they're more comfortable, but I just feel so... weighed down. Give me something like a Trayon Campers anyday

That's OK mate, but you will then need a trailer to carry all the stuff that's on your tray now, be good for short trips.
You will have to cut down on what you are carrying now, I'll bet by the time you get home you will be able to identify a hell of a lot of gear you didn't need to take, anyway good luck for the rest of the adventure, regards Frank.

Yep it sure would.. my hubby has done a lot of towing of caravans and he has said that when you get a side wind it definitely affects your fuel consumption..

Already sold the boat and associated luggage pod in Victoria before the Tassie trip and almost gave the kids bikes to Vinnies I'm keeping the camping canopy - it easily proved itself.

After 6 weeks without the van in Tassie, I can honestly say we didn't miss the van at all. Admittedly we only had 2 days of rain! On future normal length trips, we'll either go according to the weather forecast, put up with it, or go home. At worst, a motel might be a last resort.

Even though I love my canopy set up, the only thing that I'd really rather at this stage is VNX205's Trayon

Is that entirely your idea or have Amelie and Ollie been trying to talk you into one?

Maybe it was just the novelty, but as you probably remember, they seemed pretty impressed with it at Bendethra.

Funny you should say that, when in QLD all Ranga wanted was our slide on

seems he changes his mind, Amelie and Ollie were equally impressed,
depending on what state he is in

Geez mate, I had to click on this thread to find out what 'Costly Wind' was... Had a nasty thought you'd eaten something you shouldn't have for a minute...

And yes about the side wind - many moons ago driving an old 5 tonne Izusu truck furniture van I found a strong side wind was worse than a strong wind from the front. Used to kill the fuel economy and it felt like the thing was going to tip over sometimes...

Have a safe trip hope - Gav
