UPDATED: Smoke visible at Wingfield – Watch & Act
    Tuesday, 13 March 2012
Seventy Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) firefighters from 18 appliances are combatting a fire at a waste fuel depot at Wingfield.
People in and around Wingfield in Adelaide’s north are advised that a large amount of smoke is still present in the area.
The fire is burning within a large building containing fuels at a waste fuel depot on Wing Street at Wingfield. Weather conditions are favourable for firefighting.
A 150 metre area near the incident has been evacuated as a precaution due to smoke in the area.
Country Fire Service (CFS) volunteers are providing support to MFS crews and at metropolitan fire stations.
MFS Commander, Roy Thompson said that members of the public should avoid travelling to Wingfield due to the presence of smoke and emergency services vehicles.
“We are asking motorists to avoid non-essential travel to Wingfield. Those travelling in the area should exercise caution as smoke may reduce visibility.”
“Residents in the area are advised to close all doors and windows until the smoke passes, and to keep children indoors until the smoke has passed. It is advisable to shut off your air conditioner if it is drawing smoke into your building,” Commander Thompson said.
People with respiratory problems are advised to stay inside and close all doors and windows until the smoke has passed.
Parents wishing to pick their children up from local schools at the end of the school day are advised and assured that they are able to do so.
While the MFS is aware of smoke in the Wingfield area, it does advise residents that should they observe a different fire burning unattended, that they should call Triple Zero immediately.
For further information refer to the MFS website www.mfs.sa.gov.au

It's about 1.5km NW of the BP, not far from the South Rd section to the Port Expressway.

    LIVE: Breaking News

Firefighters have continued to battle a massive blaze at a waste oil depot in Adelaide overnight.

The blaze was sparked yesterday morning and quickly engulfed the Wingfield business in Adelaide's northern suburbs.

More than 100 firefighters battled the flames on the ground while the water bombing helicopter was also used to try to bring the fire under control.

A Metropolitan Fire Service spokesman says one firefighter suffered minor burns to his hand and was treated in hospital.
