Another funny thing happenned on the way home from Sydney

I say "another" because I have posted one "funny thing on the way home etc" before, it involved my son getting his Falcon fossilised near Lithgow.

This time, heading into Lithgow I heard a loud fast ticking noise, BUGGA, I did the tappets a week before, don't tell me one came loose!!

Gently applied brakes to obey speed limit to no avail, brake pedal bearly mooved, stand on pedal, reduce speed.

Pulled over to look for obviouse signs of brake problems - nothing.

Drove on to a mechanic on the highway who must be a land rover specialist because he suggested checking the oil as there is oil on the engine - D'YA THINK !

He concurred it sounds like a tappet and as it was nearly 5pm suggested I drive on gently, to Orange!

    Thanks for nothing !

So I went to the nearby Scottish restaurant and negotiated the vending of a nice warm cup of java !!

Having consumed said beverage and cleared my head I went to the car and removed the rocker cover and checked the locknuts on the tappets, all tight. A few rockers did seem a little loose though (probably just paranoia) so I tightenned them up just a whisker.

Put rocker cover back on etc, started engine, little revs, sounds ok.
    Get in car, drive away.

    Sound returns.

Now I am not one to believe in coincidence, what are the chances of a rocker comming loose at the same time as the brake boost fails ?

As I drove I concentrated on the sound and determined it to be eminating from a position somewhere infront of my feet - you guessed it -that's where the vacuum pump is.

So I drove on, willing it not to be a valve or worse and leaving a huge gap between myself and every other thing I could see.

Got home safely and this morning I took the hose off the brake booster and with the engine running for a few minutes there was no sign of a vacuum at all.

New pump on the way, hopefully here tomorrow !

But that isn't the end of it.
I am on one weeks sick leave. I had two wisdom teeth out on Monday, told the boss a month in advance, it was in the computer calendar.

I get a phone call from the boss at 8:30 this morning, still asleep, the boss says something like " due to the new direction of the company they no longer have a position for me !!!

It is just under two years since TJM Orange closed and I was redundant there but in this case I get no benefits as it is a small company and I may only get one weeks notice !

    Bugger me !

    Hi Steve,

Can tell you're not entirely negative about one bad couple of days.

Get positive.......... are you capable of doing your ex boss's job better than him / her?

Do you always want to work for someone else, and be at the mercy of events you can't manage or control?

What are you really good at?

He broke the news to you on the phone!

Sounds like you've had a bad run of it... hopefully this cloud has a silver lining for you and you get a better job with someone who has more respect for their staff than to behave in such an unprofessional manner..

You are right, I am not entirely negative, I have been through infinately worse than loosing a job, I have survived the worst thing that can happen to a parent so now I see life from a different vantage point to most and things like this are not so big any more, it has left me gutted and pretty flat but it is a road block that I just have to find a way around.

The job was in whitegoods repair, mainly warranty work which just doesn't pay so no, I will not try and get into that line myself.

My strong point is that I am a problem solver, mainly physical, hence I was good at fixing coffee machines etc.

Don't know that there is a way to make a good living out of that though.

    I will find something.

Trouble is that when I got laid off at TJM the wife and I could work it out between us and get by but we are now in the final stages of divorce so I am on my own with no access to the financial reserve we have because it is waiting to be divided in settlement.

The mine is always hiring but it is akin to selling your soul to the devil, they are like drug dealers, they get you hooked on the money and then you can't afford to live without it so they own your soul.

I have a mate who works there and through winter he turns completely white because he never sees the sun and even though you get your 7 on 7 off or whatever, you are so shagged from 7x 12 hr days that you need the days off to recover. It is no way to live, not for me.

Last resort, yeah but very much LAST !

Well I emailed an application off to a prospective employer late last night and was surprised to get a phone call this afternoon wanting me for an interview !
Went and saw the guy this arv and I think I made a pretty good impression, we are on the same page with corporate goals and quality work etc, I am first on the list for a second interview !

I won't say who with until I know for sure but it may raise a few eyebrows

It sounds like the positive attitude you have shown may have brought early rewards.

    Well done.

Thanks mate, I hope so !

I went into work this morning to pick up my things and the boss was quite apologetic as they saw it comming but didn't want to say anything, I said it would have been good if they had told us so we could have started looking.
I also told him a phone call at 8:30 telling me I don't have a job wasn't very nice either, he hung his head and said sorry. Can't blast him because I want him to give me references.
