I am a Scot, from Edinburgh.

Moved out here in 2000, went back in 2005 for a 6 month holiday and worked around Europe for 4 years, you have to love having two passports!! Came back in 2009 and set up home once more, I never had the good sense to buy a landy and bring it with me. So in 2009 I bought my Defender.

Australia is a great country, I miss Scotland at Hogmany and festival time when I know my friends and family are having a party without me, I reminisce on the odd occasion but as long as my parents are fit enough to get on a plane and come visit then i see no need to go back for now.

One thing I do miss is driving of the ferry in Calais onto the other side of the road, there is an odd feeling about that like it is the beginning of a great adventure and I never get bored with it.

But then I get a similar feeling joining the M1 driving to Brisbane, but maybe more of a hmm who is going to try and take me out today and cause a crash.

    My support goes like this.

Rugby Union: Scotland - then any other British Team.
Football: Hibs - Scotland - Australia - any other team apart from England (Just kidding)
Cricket: as Scotland has no real team in this game I like to see the Ashes go to the team who claims to be the best in the world the least.
AFL: has to be the Gold Coast now, the Lions are not doing well.

I was born in Sheffield and I am not responsible for that! Late parents said coming to Australia was the best 20 Pounds they ever spent. I have been back a few times, even worked for 4 years, met the other half from Wales and brought her back. In 2006 we drove around Britain for 10 months, with a month in Ireland, but everytime I go there I lose a bit of love for the place so I do not go anymore. As I grew up in Australia and have been here 57 years, I consider myself an Aussie. Most of the rellies have passed on too.

Add me to the list, though the title "Pom" grates slightly.

Born in Bristol to a set of grandparents that comprised one Welsh grandmother, an Irish grandmother, an English grandfather and a Scottish grandfather makes me a real mongrel! And with my father in the RAF and moving around every couple of years to a new base or new country means I have no real ties to anywhere.

It also bugs me that the average Aussie can't get the distinction between being "British" versus being "English". So when someone says to me "You're English, aren't you?", the answer is no. I speak English, but my passport says British.

Australia is home. End of story, miss nothing of the old country. Everything I have is invested here, both emotionally and financially.

Many non Scots mistakenly use the word Scotch when referring to the Scottish, which I understand among many things, really annoy true Scots. But I heard a radio interview the other day with a Publican who owned an Irish pub in Melbourne tell that he isn't actually Irish, he is Scotch!
The term POM is incorrect to describe all of us here. POM is a corruption of the acronym POHM which means Prisoner Of Her Majesty. There are thousands of non British people in Australia that are true POHMS. A quick Google of Victorian Prisons show that Initials HM(Her Majesty) preceed the name of the prison. EG, HM Prison Arrarat.

It strikes me there's a load of us 'poms' on this forum, which got me thinking... Is it because its a Landy forum and a we have deeply rooted thing for British engineering & excellence, or just a fascination with oil leaks!! I mean, if this was a Toybota site would there be so many poms? I doubt it.
    Regards,
    Jon
