Anyway, hope to meet some of you next year!
Hi Pam, I think you can get a retirement visa from age 55.
I know a retired couple from the UK who came to Oz 14 years ago on holiday, they are still here on a retirement visa, I believe they have to leave every 2 or 3 years and come back and they don't get medicare (fair enough) so must take out full private health insurance. They get by on there UK pensions and travel around Oz in a caravan, they also do a lot of house sitting where they get free accommodation and it saves them having to pay camping fee's etc.
Actually they should be at my Mates property this week but they blew a piston on there Prado (known injector over fuelling problem) and are stuck in the country somewhere.
There is also an investor retirement visa where you need assets between 500k and 750k (depending where you choose to live).

Was in Masham North Yorkshire for a week in July last year, great spot and close to the Black sheep and Theakston's breweries which was very handy ; )
    Cheers

Hi Mark, Unfortunately these days the ONLY way to get in as a retiree is with the Investor Retirement visa, and as I said in my previous post, in effect you need to be a millionaire! In addition to the assets and investment we'd need quite a large pension income.

.... basically we would need about GBP1.25 million in cash/assets, plus about 3 times as much retirement pension as we are expecting to get.

So, for most 'ordinary' folk the days of retiring to Australia are long gone, I'm afraid.

The only way we could possibly spend substantial time in Australia in our retirement would be to get say 6 months or so on a long-stay tourist visa, then go back to the UK for 6 months, then another 6 months back down under. Spring/summer in Oz, followed by Spring/Summer in the UK! We'd probably buy a motorhome for Australia and downsize to a very small house in the UK. But I don't think our pensions will stretch to that though due to the cost of flying out plus other travel expenses. It is something to consider but I really don't see us being able to do, as pensions are really going to get smaller - the days of easy retirement are long gone for us in the UK!

Black Sheep beer is one of the best !

    Re: Who's a POM?

Born and bred in the UK. Moved out in'89, moved back to UK in '95, got back to Melbourne in '04 and will never go back. I always thought I was the 1st generation of my family here, but found an ancestor was sent here in 1788, his line died out in 1902. In 1912 another relation moved out to NSW, signed up and went to Gallipoli, he died in 1955 with no kids, so it was my turn. I guess my family are just meant to be here and I couldn't think of anywhere better - all my immediate family live here now.

Add me too. Born Weston super mare, somerset. Came out with the folks as 25 pound poms when I was 12. I went back on "holiday" when I was 21. I never intended to stay 10 years but life just took over. Moved back with my two kids in 98 and never looked back. My kids are proper Aussies now and love it. I truly believe that it's the best country in the world. I would only go back to show Kerry where I was born, but would rather use the money to travel more of Oz.

Good stories, I enjoyed this thread.

    Cheers, Nino
