Not sure if you have seen this, I just came across it when I thought you had a good idea building your own slide and thought i would investigate further.
This guy in the US made one for himself after finding the postage from OZ to be the same as the price of the slide, in the thread there is a post from Platinum telling him to back off as they have the patent, he now has his own company making drop down slides and selling them in the US, interesting read, but there are pictures and info on building your own in there.

A really good read and as for 'THE' email it could have been interpreted either way. The consensus shows a negative vote from the yanks but it is all good for 1967 TLC having the last laugh. Plenty of pics, some helpful measurements from the web page and with the video clips included looks like a project to get under way.

I've been using the DS40 drop slide for 12 months now. Brilliant product. Definitley no safety issues I can see ...
Being that cargo space in the rear of a D2 is somewhat limited, and with a twin drawer setup (Drifta) making the fridge ride ontop of the drawers, AND running a Foxwing that makes it almost impossible to get into the fridge (47L ARB ) if it was on a standard slide when the Foxwing is opened out, meant that the DS40 was really my only choice ... after the sticker shock subsided I'm really happy with the choice.
A bit off-topic, but I don't use any sort of fridge slide, drop-down or otherwise. I use one of these which is screwed to the floor and into which my fridge locks. No need for straps to hold it down. Maximises use of space. Low enough for me to to get food stuff out without problem. I don't use draws but rather ridged plastic boxes that are easy to quickly load and unload. Two will fit between the fridge and the passenger seat (I have a Def90). Two 20 litre stainless jerry cans behind the drivers seat for water then 4 boxes abutting the jerrys and next to the fridge. Couple of chairs fit on top of the boxes. Most other gear fits over the wheel boxes.
