Its not the same, I know, but my 1500kg camper tows great.
Hi All,
I'm looking at buy a large caravan 21'6'' offroad caravan around 2100kg.
Just would like here from D2 TD5 owners who have towed large van, how well the TD5 towed larger vans.
Thanks Wade
Its not the same, I know, but my 1500kg camper tows great.
It should have little trouble as my parents have a 24 footer weighing close to (if not over) 3 tonnes and it has no problems. Very stable, gets along at about 85 to 90k an hour . Only tows in third (it's an auto). Fuel economy is reasonable, temperatures stay in a good operating range. Watch the braking distance with ABS. I've towed a two ton tractor on a trailer with the same truck and while i would have preferred to tow it with my Isuzu, I didn't have that luxury at the time. The disco was fine. Quite impressed to be honest.
If you chip the engine it will tow it like a dream, 420 Nm can easily be extracted from the Td5, a lot better than the stock 315 Nm, we tow old cars (2- 3 tonnes including trailer) with the Td5 (manual), and my grandfather also towed his with his Td5 (auto) (prior to the new SDV6 D4), the auto was a slug sitting at about 90km/hr max, but the manual would still drag them along at 120 or so on the flat, hills are a fair bit slower haha, but they will do it.
Cheers
Will
Wades, you don't mention if the Td5 is an auto or manual.
If it's an auto would suggest an extra auto cooler. Our hotter climate needs it. Had the auto for a while and found that looong uphills and lots of short rises can give the auto heart burn even if you use it as a manual and lock it in 3rd.
The older Td5s are getting old now so looking after the torque convertor is important. There are article in here about upgrading to a larger one.
As mentioned "chipping" is worth its weight in diesel.
Otherwise found the old D2 a comfortable tow vehicle.
New :- D3 TDV6 2006 SE
Bullbar, traxide dual battery
General grabber ATs
Mitch hitch
Home made drawer and fridge system
Foldable UHF antenna on roof rail
wades.
We have a 2011 Retreat Daydream. 23' long, 2180kg tare, 2580 atm. I am a first time caravaner and it took me quite some time to get my head around the realities of towing something so big and heavy. Before I modded my TD5, it was quite a daunting experiance. After the mods, it tows very well for a 2.5l motor. Mine is a manual and the biggest problem I have is hill starts. I have to rev the thing more than what I am comfortable with to get the combination moving. I sometimes use low range. Overtaking trucks can sometimes move you around a bit too. I have to keep an eye on my EGT's also. If I dont change down soon enough and labor the thing, the EGT's skyrocket. I would not want to tow anything bigger/heavier for holiday touring.
Hope this helps.
Regards
Robbo
