    Mt airlie closed?

    I heard the other night that thanks to a couple of morons in the rain lately significant damage has been done to the track an col has closed it indefinitely.

    Sorry if this has already been covered I have just returned from a couple of weeks away. I was pretty upset to hear this having only done the track once I was looking forward to returning soon.

    Some people dont give a stuff about the tracks and plough them up Maybe sombody that knows Col could ask if a working weekend might help I,d be in for it

    Col doesn't control it anymore i believe. It's national park. Will make enquiries...

    In a way he does control it, to get access to the track you need to go through his property, if he closes his gate, NP can't get to the track up to Airley

    The area I know as Mt Airly (about 10 km NE of Capertee) is not national park. Abutting to the south however is Gardens Of Stone National Park (to the south of Glen Davis Rd) and to the north is the recently gazetted Capertee National Parks. However Mt Airly has been proposed as an addition to the National Parks estate for a quite a number of years (initially as a State Conservation Area and more recently as an addition to Gardens Of Stone). The area is almost entirely withinin a current coal production title.

    I'm 99% sure Col sold it to the mining company, and is on a lifetime peppercorn rent arrangement. The mine & Col want to keep National Parks out.

    Last time I was there with LROC, he was receptive to the idea of 4WD clubs doing some maintenance. It'd be worth formalising somehow - adopt-a-track US style.

    I was there yesterday spoke with Col, but was unable to drive the track due to the temporary closure.

    Col said that a group went up there in wet weather just before Easter and trashed part of the track by turning it into a dangerous and impassable mud pit. He is facing a large repair bill as his own car suffered considerable damage when he went to see what had happened.

    The damaged section track is controlled by NSW NPWS. Col offered to repair the track but NPWS directed him not to as he would then be responsible if damage or injury occurred to visitors as a result of his repairs. He noted that during the two years that area has been managed by NPWS that no track maintenance had been performed.

    The good news is that Col has contacted some local 4WD clubs and they are having a working bee on the weekend of June 2 & 3 to repair the damage. If that is successful then the track should be re-opened.
