Try as I may, I can't get my 300Tdi to get over 9.5L/100km or for that matter, over 110kmh over a cliff Still get there in the end though and still age at the same rate

Certainly don't! - not even around town... (got the roadside portraits to prove it )

Point is/was, stopping 5 more times than the diesel, means 25 minutes lost, which you can't make up by chasing him... 'cos you won't break the speed-limit.... Not many of us can limit a stop to 'only' 5 minutes, especially if you have family on board.

Stopping 3 times more means 15 minutes behind = 24km behind.

Apologies, should have used more words to make it clearer...

    My own example:-
On a 1:45 hour country trip driving a 100+km/h Coach, the same can be done in 1:50 ~1:55 in another, differantly geared bus limited to 87km/h. Hills are involved...

Disclaimer:- I muchly prefer the sound and 'inexorableness' of a diesel engine, to the poncy 'hundred firings per revolution' noise that is the background to the v-8 rumble, which I find annoying. ! - Have driven too many perfectly balanced 6 cyl. engines that simply purrrrrr......
