Thread: VIN on '86 County

On the right hand chassis rail, low down in front of the front wheel.

VIN numbers came in in the early 1980's about the same time as the 110, prior to that they were an 8 digit number plus a suffix letter.

When you find it go to the LR VIN button on Clifton Scientific Text Services, the Netherlands and enter the number you have and it will give you the vehicle descriptors.

If it doesn't give you the correct details "caveat emptor".

All 86 model cars have VINs, as have all Landrover 110s. On the 110 County it is, as Diana says, on the outside of the chassis in front of the spring, perhaps partly obscured by the bullbar fixings. It is also on the compliance plate, which should be on the engine side of the bulkhead high up, in the middle.

One of the checks on a S/H car is to ensure that both these are present, have the same number, and it agrees with the papers.

While '86 LRs do indeed have VINs, if you are checking for encumbrances through the PPRS Personal Property Securities Register (the dodgy replacement of the REVs scheme) , it seems that they see no need to record VINs as such for "older" cars.

Instead you need the "chassis number", which in the subject case is actually a VIN - except that the PPRS doesn't recognise it as such.

If you enter it in your enquiry as a VIN you'll get a "not registered" result.

You can get to speak to a real person only after you pay your fee with PPRS - ask to speak to a supervisor if you are getting a "not registered" result.

From what I can see the PPRS does not carry the same protections for a buyer as a REVs certificate - (maybe that's why REVs was dropped).

There also appear to be a number of private operators that charge exhorbitant fees for rego checks without guarantees
