About to do a TD5 Conversion.....

    Hi All,

Been a while... 2 new kids will do that..

I have very recently sold the 300TDI out of my Disco 1 UTE and I am looking at putting a TD5 engine and matching auto in the old girl

I have been emailing Land Rover wreckers / breakers in the UK for the last 2 weeks and after sending out about 15 emails only a handful have come back and to my surprise only and 1 has come back saying that they are happy to supply the main parts I need to do the conversion and will even help ship it back to me in Melbourne.
With Land Rovers a plenty in the UK I find this a little strange.... maybe I am looking in the wrong place??

I know we have some members that have done this conversion and I would like to show you all the list of parts that I think I am going to need and get some feed back before I hand over any cash. I would also appreciate if any members have had dealings with wreckers in the UK and could recommend any to me. The mob I am looking at using is 4x4 Salvage, Landrover Spares, 4x4 Parts, Range Rover Parts, Somerset - cws4x4 so far the have been pretty good on price and helpful.

    Thanks in advance
    Mick

Have you tried Triumph Rover Spares?

Hope this helps in some way!

    Hi Mick
I've read your build thread of the ute, top job BTW, love it, and know you put a lot of work into it, why don't you buy a rolled D2 and put the rear half of the ute cab on the chassis and marry it up to D2 doors and panels etc. Means you get a lot newer chassis and better dynamics but don't have to go about putting a new motor in the old chassis, but if thats not your thing i competely understand as i want to do a ute chop (almost identical to yours) to my D1, will only be a weekend (read: bush) car though as i'll be getting a D2 shortly, i guess it depends on your own scenario, but i know if i had a td5 it would be in the newer chassis.

    Cheers

    Interesting
I am curious as to why you didnt contact Triumph in Adelaide as well.
My A1 condition (before it was rolled) TD5 D2A ended up there and I see they have plenty of others

You seem locked into a D2A & auto which i would have thought would be the hardest. Why not a Defender TD5 & R380? Fewer sensors etc.

    Anyway, my thoughts are:

    - Why is the engine ECU discarded??

    - D2s have an engine ECU & a body ECU. You'll need both I suspect.

    - The only workshop I know of in Sydney that's done this shoehorn got it running for 10 secs or so, then it'd stop. Donor was a rolled D2, they suspected they missed a sensor up in the D2's roof somewhere. They never did get it going properly so far as I know. But that's a few years ago now.

    - A early ZF would possibly be easier, particularly if going with a Defender TD5.

    - If going electronic ZF, then the tuning kits from Ashcroft will help in matching the shift points to the vehicle weight, your driving style etc.

    Keep us posted!

    Hi Muppet,

I will start a build thread when i start the conversion.

I have used TRS plenty of times over the years but for a TD5 engine and Autobox plus all the odd ends they want about $8500. From the UK I am looking at about $4500 - $5500 shipped!!!

Thanks mate. It seems like a life time ago that i did that chop.

If i bring another wreck home i think my wife would divorce me

I have a fully upgraded drive line on the D1 chassis and i don't want to have to replace all of that again... and its fully engineered.

If I were to drop my body on to a D2 chassis (crossed my mind may times) I think I would end up with all sorts of issues getting it engineered without ABS and airbags….

I have thought about selling the UTE a few times and buying my wife a new car and jumping in to her D2a but I just can’t do it.

    Hi Max

The “parts not needed” is just because I have the parts already or I am going to get them locally… no point shipping a D2 tank from the UK..

The easy way would be to use a defender ECU and keep my hydraulic auto… but I don’t do easy :P

I have driven a few Td5 conversion in the past and been involved in building a few and they are all running fine. I know Ritter do a good conversion with a compushift ECU for the ZF but I don’t like the shift pattern so I am going to stick with the factory BCU.
