    Meditation

i saw something on tv last night about meditating and how you will be healthy and live longer if you practise it.
i have tried it a few times over the years with mixed results.
Usually end up with a very sore lower back or something just as distressful.
Last night i gave it another go, climbed down onto the carpet and arranged my stiff legs as best i could and began to think about the fun we had rolling Jaffas down the floor at the old cinema when we were kids.
I finished with a sore tailbone and cramped old legs and rather sorry for myself.
Question is, what are you supposed to think about when you meditate ?
    Or dont you ?

    Cheers.

    Robert.

PS: I dont think I will try that again unless you can do it leaning up against a wall or something.

PS: and once you have assumed the position, how the heck do you know when you are actually meditating ?
Is it a fuzzy feeling or what ?

I thought you weren't supposed to think about anything but focus on breathing or a sound or something like that I thought the Idea was to clear your mind...

I have never done it though so I could be totally wrong here, have you done a google search?

Went to Bombay many years ago, got on the grog with a local , asked her about this meditation caper, she said " clear your mind of all distractions, sweep all conscious thought away", I tried it, and you know it worked! My mind has been totally blank ever since. Even bought a Land Rover! Bob uuummmmmm......
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

Hey mate - I am far from an expert but have done a bit of meditating over the years. My advice would be forget about the posture, it is not important, if someone had no arms or legs they could still meditate .

Also dont worry about what to or not to think about - allow your mind to do whatever it will do and simply observe your thoughts as they come and go.

That would be a good start.

Thats probably the way to go and sounds relaxing and peaceful.
But wouln't the benefit be lost when you snap out of it, I mean, you would have to go like mad to allow your thoughts to catch up again.
Probably be best to do it laying down.

It might be a good idea to go somewhere that practices meditation, and they could guide you through the process.

My experience of meditation is that you become more observant of your thoughts outside of meditation, so the process is ongoing. Your thoughts have no catching up to do. Most of our thoughts are unhelpful anyway, or maybe that is just mine .

G'Day. Strictly speaking, to meditate IS to think deeply/ contemplate/ reflect!
    Beatya, Ron

If your goal is to relax, then consciously reliving a peaceful happy event will do. Or Imagining your ideal peaceful location/ situation will get you there.

If your goal is to quiet your monkey mind (chitter chatter/ all over the place. My greatest challenge) then start with a darkened space and focus on the flame of a lit candle or simple shape/ picture. One that won't engage your Left brain too much, analyzing. Slowly dis engaging your Left Brain until you can activate this state by closing your eyes and blocking out stimulus. Eventually you will do this eyes open.

If working on a solution to an issue, 'programming' yourself to find the solution at the start, then clearing your conscious thoughts, one-by-one re-inforcing the thought that you know the solution, you only need to listen to yourself.
    Hope this helps.
    Dave.
