Rear Air Bag problems 2003 TD5

Hi, Just new to this. I have a 2003 Disco TD5 and am having issues with the rear air bags deflating without warning. It happens whilst driving or when it is parked. Took it to the authorised LR dealer here and they could not find any fault. They hooked it up to the computer and found no fault codes. Leak tested the air bags and no leaks were found. It deflates then inflates when it wants to. Has anyone come across this before. Any ideas?

Hi, what most people do when they play up is toss the bags and fit coils. It is very common practice for this mod. It is usually more expensive to diagnose the issue. So unless you know your way around a car I would be looking into doing that mod.

It could be a simple fix, but I am not familiar with the system and the above is what I have read about.

It's almost always the same fix... Replace the airbags! They leak erraticaly and I messed around with mine for ages then just bought new bags and saw all the cracks in the old ones.

It's an easy DIY job just search the forum.

Does sound like something electronic like faulty Height Sensors?

99% of the time when they drop it's a leak in bags' line or compressor failing.

Mine also has a mind of it's own. Replaced a bag last week due to a minor leak. No faults, no line issues, no ECU errors, compressor OK, still dropped on one side since. The Air Valve Union is a bit loose so im considering adding some threadlock if it drops again this week!.

Considering coils if i get any more issues..

Good luck, lets is know how you get on.

I have a 2003 D2 and had the rear end drop once parked but not all the time. A leak test did not show anything initially, eventually it showed up as a leak in the fold of an air bag. If it is a slow leak the compressor should keep up with the leak while under way, so if it is dropping while under way you may need to look elsewhere.

    good god!
    replace the bags?? Why?
DD still isnt sure the bags leak.
A new set of bags will last longer than a set of coils, loaded or unloaded.

Is your help to tell newbies to just replace parts untill "its" fixed ???

    I'm with theMod.

You'll have to inspect the bag at full extension first. Search how to take the airsprings out, then do it. The base of the spring will have cracks or breaks in it if it is a leaker. You'll probably find dirt/grit inclusions between the roll in the bag and the base of the spring, and this is probably where you'll see the problem.

Replacement after that if you observe the deterioration described above.

AirBagMan in Qld for replacements with a small change to the inlet joint on the airline/airbag. LR for genuine. Big difference in price!

    Goodluck with the project.

    Cheers

2003 Range Rover hse - air bag leak

    Hi all
I just had my car serviced and while lifting it, the old air bags may have broken and the front right one has a leak. This is causing abs braking or engage and errors in air suspension to come up.

Just wondering if anyone has had this before; and where they sourced their air bags.. (I’m in St Ives, Sydney)
also if fixing, does it make sense to do both?
Not set up to do this myself, so any recommendations on who in the area could help would also be useful.

    Thanks!
    Marc

PM Roverlord (Mario and Heather) rather than going through the EBay store, the discount generally covers the shipping. Mario knows his onions, thus only stocks proven, quality parts.

I had similar problems with my D2a.
The bags would work perfectly most of the time But every now and then they would dump all the air and the truck would be sitting on the bump stops.
I had it into the workshop on 2 occasions and each time there was nothing wrong with the bags or the compressor.
After the second time having to drive back from Sharks bay (500k) on the bump stops I spat the dummy and had a set of coils fitted.
Even with only the coils and not air bags the D2a is still an extremely comfortable ride on and off road
The air suspension is Better than coils But at least now I KNOW that I will Never have to put up with driving on only the bump stops ever again.
