Great Australian story, with science, politics, sex & beer! [& Louis Pasteur]

Whilst driving yesterday, I liistened to an amazing story about Louis Pasteur's involvement with the early attempts to eradicate rabbits from Australia. A book by Stephen Dando Collins was being discussed, " Pasteurs gambit, the Australian rabbit plague and a $ 10 million dollar prize". The story involves Adrien Loir, [Pastuers nephew], Sir Henry Parkes [ Australias founding father], and the beautiful actress Sarah Bernhardt . The beer? well, Louis Pasteur invented a process for sterilising things such as beer, and working with Carlsberg brewery, enabled Carlsberg to be the first brewer to ship beer internationaly, without the beer going off. And what does this have to with Australia? I hear you ask - Adrien Loir , was sent to Aust. to win the $ 10 million contract to deal with the rabbits, whilst waiting for the Gov. [ of NSW] to make a decision [not much has changed] teamed up with the founder of Victoria Bitter, and made VB the 2nd brewery in the World to have the ability to export beer. Adrien also had it off with Sarah on Rodd Island, Iron Cove, Sydney, where he had set up only the 2nd Pasteur Institute in the World, a fact even the French did not know, until Mr Collins sent them the evidence. Fascinating story, proving fact is indeed stranger than fiction. Bob

I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

Sir Thomas Aitken was the owner of the brewery, it was in the late 1800's [1870. I think] and the article says it was in Melbourne. Pasteur is remembered for pasteurisation of milk, but that was a shootoff from his work with wine. He is regarded as saving the French wine industry. Other achievements of his were vaccines for anthrax, rabies, for silkworms in the French silk industry [ the worms were dying from some disease], cultivating yeast for the beer industry, [ his crowning glory ] Something I didn't know was that in his later years stress over worry about making money led him to 3 strokes! whoulda thought, Bob

I got to listen to this on the radio too. I sometimes catch Conversations with Dick Fiddler whilst driving around the countryside between worksites. He seems to make any topic interesting. I've read a couple of books after hearing about them on his show. This was a great story and even had me slowing down so that I didn't reach my destination before it was finished!
