Smart move. You might find that you and the kids are up to the commitment, or otherwise.
Try and find one nearby that will let you all participate in all the mundane stuff like feeding, mucking out, gear care, etc.
You might like it, or not, but at least you'll know what its really all about.

Good move, my daughter rides 2-3 days a week and it's quite expensive, but she wants to be an equine vet so it goes with the territory I suppose. She also trades off working there occasionally with private lessons and pony club days to lessen the financial burden on her poor ole Dad
