Let's face it, the Landrover designers have produced some pretty average placement of things over the years, the oil filter on the TD5 is 1 of the first that springs to mind, and the fuel filter on my D3 aint much better... but as stated before, plenty of other brands have similar design fault's, and my AU ford ute needs most of the front suspension pulled off to change the sump gasket thinking lifting the engine may be easier to do that job..

If what the Darwin Mechanic has said is true about 4 different workshop manual's stating totally different settings, then you can understand his frustration..

We've all been guilty of venting the frustration just like he's done.

Funny the local NRMA guy who I get my RWC from says exactly that about Great Wall now.
Kia is owned by Hyundai and a lot of the components are shared, so IMHO they should be pretty good now. Hyundai in turn has always had close links to Mitsubishi .

As we all know some times it is the job others the knowledge level of the person involved others it is the manufacturer. Extreme cases bring a 3 together at the one time. Now if the mechanic had a good evening the night before it is going to impact on their ability to deal with anything that is not 'standard'.

I had 3 engines 4.4 v8 engines in an X5 in 6 months. The garage was BMW approved engine rebuilder. First engine lasted a week. Each time it was the fault of someone else! Was also complaining that my returning the vehicle was costing him money! It takes 2 days to remove the engine and not much less to put it back again. Do I blame the workmanship or the engine and BMW? Good news is that my wife will not allow another BMW into the family we have to go back to Range Rovers as have had a few of them with no major problems.

My son had a Kia - his wife won't entertain the possibility of another one. The most dramatic problem was the failure of all four wheels (the first one the centre broke out on a roundabout), two of them before there was a recall (there had already been a recall on them in the USA). But there were a number of other problems as well, including recalls - but the parts not available for months.

My first job out of school was working at a rental car place in Alice Springs.
The company had 6 Kia Sorrentos (I think) and all of the shocks blew in every single one.
Once I had to drive about 100km in one of them with no shocks. It was a scary experience (but fun). It felt like the car was suspended on a bungee rope driving down the highway.
