    Electric Landrovers.

    Just reading an older book I acquired recently ("The shape of the motor car", Everett, 1955 - interestingly according to a stamp in it, it belonged to the BMC technical library!).

    It has a very brief mention that one of the earliest electric cars anywhere was built by J.K.Starley in 1888. Now as many of you probably know, that was the company that changed its name to "Rover" in about 1890.

    So it is probably correct to say that Landrover's electric heritage goes back almost 125 years!

    I'll ask Arthur Garthon (my grandfather) what he reckons, he restored and owns the oldest restored Rover in Australia (1905 6hp single cylinder), and also restored (later sold) the #1 Series 1 (first registered in Aus) and was in the business of LR and Rover since the 50's. He lives out your way now JD (Wagga), don't know him do you?

    This page Rovers In Focus (near the bottom) shows 2 1905 models, and calls them 2 "of the oldest"...

    Also - I thought the 1st series 1 in AU was from Perth...

    Speaking of Electric Landrovers, they have to be in the future somewhere,
    can't see how it could ever work for remote travel tho- unless your packing an ingersoll rand generator trailer

    The light (not lime) green one (the winning car at that event), is Arthur's, there are a few 1905 cars in Aus, they are the oldest as far as we and the Rover owners club know. Not sure on the Landie, but i know it was the first registered (maybe only in NSW), and was from Granville motors, it led the 2008 60th event at Cooma with the new owner.

    Oh i see, just assumed central west as around Wagga area, i guess thats Riverina or South West Slopes though.

    As to electric Landies the LRX was supposed to come in a hybrid electric model? What happened to that?

    Grenville, not Granville, I think. I would have seen it at Cooma.

    Dunno. There was also an article in LRO about five years ago about a Series electric Landrover - built as a military prototype to allow silent movement, but went no further, for the usual EV reasons - short range and low performance, and almost all payload used for batteries.
