Isnt this a Land Rover forum![]()
No sorry can't healp, i thought all the people that had them said they were indestructable, i can tell you they arent but anyway...
Has anyone shorn off the rear crossmember of a hzjlandcruiser tray top? I managed to do so today courtesy of the attached tow bar - three of the side attaching bolts sheared/came loose which led to the aforementioned. Anyone got any comments/suggestion regarding repair? JP

theeeeup, ewwwgh buggah.
Going to need pics before any advice on a repair can be given and like all good toyota mechanics (or is that an oxy moron) when faced with a landy repair, "gunna be a big job mate" is likely to be mentioned.

and they have 3500kg tow cap and 350 kg on the ball....I'd like to see a rear crossmember failure on a Defender...that is only rated at 250 kg

Mr LR Jnr, weelllllll, yes it isn't a landrover but the help and advice and the "can fix it" attitude of the forum members here at aulro is invaluable.
Thanks Dave, I'll take some photo's in daylight, I'm currently in the middle of seeding so at this stage my solution was to jack it back up into place and reattach with fencing wire. I'm pretty fortunate really, my hydraulic system is partly bolted onto the rear cross-member and because I was only done about 10km's an hour when it went crack it hasn't done anywhere near as much damage as it could have done.
I had a look at the cracks and a fair few of them weren't fresh so its been brewing for some time, the bolts used to secure the towbar to the side of the chassis were of a smaller diameter to the holes on the towbar, I think that has contributed significantly to the bolts sheering off.
Ok so I have finally had time to take the tray off the landcruiser and thought I would post a few pics. These were taken after the towbar was removed - in one of them you can clearly see that the bolts were moving within the holes. JC I had a look at the welding of the cross member in the 130 today and I don't think that it would suffer the same problem, the landrover is actually welded together unlike the toyota which appears to have mainly been tacked on.
At this stage I am thinking that the best idea is to take it right off, straighten it out and then grind the previous welds on the chassis before re-welding it. Has anyone got any other ideas or pointers?
Interestingly I was talking to the son in law of the farmer that I used to work for in W.A. the other night and one of their cruisers did the same thing. I then googled it and it seems that it is a reasonably common occurance even in the new V8 versions and it looks like Toyota like to blame the aftermarket towbars when it comes to warranty claims - funny that.
no, I've never shorn the rear cross member off a landcruiser
Geez mate by the looks of that its a going to be a big job. Will need to get specialist in to remove and repair.
Maybe even a engineers certification done on the repair.
Parts might need to come from overseas now that will be a few weeks.
Will need to check the chassis rails havent been bent as well.
I have a few jobs infront of yours mate. maybe start on it next week.
Hope you have cheque book it wont be cheap.
Apart from that i have no idea what im looking that but it will cost you money.
Good Luck
