I've been out in the past and watched people (in things like Land Cruisers with 6" lift, diff locks and 35" tyres and like) struggle to get over an obstacle that someone with a relatively stock vehicle tackled with no problem. All those mods will only help if you know where your wheels are meant to go in the first place.

I wonder how many people buy a 4WD with all the mods as their first off roader without any real experience of driving without all the assistance. Not starting off with lockers and the like means you have to put some thought into what you're doing rather than just putting your boot down and hoping for the best.

On our last time up at Cervantes, we frequented a fishing beach north of the town, accessed via a couple of sand-dune tracks.
The 'Bongo' van managed it quite well with 20 psi in road tyres (4WD Jap TD van).- Until one day when a LandDestroyer came through the track with his humungous wheels and 400 hp V8. - Did a great job of bogging himself and permantly remodelling the sand track. After noticing his rock-hard tyres.... I just backed up and left him for someone else...

Yeah, amazing isn't it - people consider that to be a reliable vehicle, but because the trannie failed on my Rangie at 165KKM, my mates tell me I've got an unreliable vehicle.... When you mention the dramas that Toyota have had with their V8 Diesel, they just say 'Yeah, but it was only on a few, and they have fixed it now'... I would think that there have been more of these engines with issues in the last few years than every Range Rover made in the same period....

I always thought that those people with highly modified vehicles were just very poor drivers who needed all the mods to make up for their lack of 4WDing skills.
