I think it true quite often. I've been out in the past and watched people (in things like Land Cruisers with 6" lift, diff locks and 35" tyres and like) struggle to get over an obstacle that someone with a relatively stock vehicle tackled with no problem. All those mods will only help if you know where your wheels are meant to go in the first place.
I wonder how many people buy a 4WD with all the mods as their first off roader without any real experience of driving without all the assistance. Not starting off with lockers and the like means you have to put some thought into what you're doing rather than just putting your boot down and hoping for the best.
