    Another 'expert' offering his opinions.

We all know that people who don't drive Land Rovers think they know the most about them and that not driving a Land Rover means that you can bag those who do. Well, I've just had a case at work...

I've just come back from a 5900km trip through the outback and up to Cape York. At no time during this trip did my trusty 15 year old Discovery suffer from mechanical problems, punctures or any other show stopping failure. In fact, the only thing that needed attention during the who trip was a broken rivet on the roof rack.

Upon hearing of my trip, a colleague started talking to me about his trip (with his mates) up to Cape York a couple of years ago in their Tritons and Hiluxs.

His story included details on how each of the cars in his group suffered multiple problems and how all but one had required some kind of extensive bush mechanics to keep it going after breaking down.

When I told him I had not had any problems at all he asked what I drove. On being told that I had done the trip in a 15 year old V8 Discovery he replied: "A Land Rover? I'd never try to get to The Tip in one of them - they're far too unreliable.". I didn't want to point out what he'd just been telling me about his trip.

He then went on to give me the following information about Land Rovers:
    1) The axles are only made out of mild steel and snap really easily if you try driving off road.
    2) If your rear axles break you then have to "lock your hubs, select front wheel drive, and try to drive home in as straight a line as possible".

Lock my hubs? Select front wheel drive? Hmmm...

He also repeated the usual "All Land Rovers leak oil" line. When I told him that mine actually doesn't leak oil he suggested in all seriousness that I check my oil levels when I get home as if it wasn't leaking any it meant there wasn't any in the engine.

Finally, he told me that the brake lines on Land Rovers are too short and that if you have your suspension fully flexed you will break them.

    Gotta love these experts.

Best tell you knowledgeable friend that selectable 4 x 4 went out with the last of the Series 3's pre Stage1's, and that all of the coil sprung ones are constant 4 wheel drive, and that ALL Range Rovers and Discos have vacc assisted 4 wheel disc brakes as standard equipment

I had one of my customers ask me why I'd brought such an unreliable car, and why I didn't buy a Toyota. I noticed he was driving a V8 Diesel LC and asked if he had a problem with the oil consumption, he replied "not much, but Toyota have replaced an engine under warranty after it ran out of oil and siezed".

    Go figure....

I don't suffer idiots all that well, I may have said something he would live to regret, or completely ignore him - probably the latter. If he asked why I would just say something like 'No use talking to you mate - you know everything already - just like my 14 year old Daughter...'

That's pure gold. I haven't really had this problem with "experts" and I'm only aware of it through the hilarious stories on this forum. Up here in Toyota country, you'd think I'd hear this all of the time, but maybe people think I'm so crazy I shouldn't be approached. (I hope so.) My plan is that when it does happen, I will laugh so hard the offender will give up and go away. I do think the whole business is very, very funny.

It should also get me out of having to recover anyone - "Naw, sorry, my Rangie will break if I pull you out. See you."
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.

I like people who use the "Land rover are ****, range rover are way better" line.
Now obviously, RR and LR are both similar and different, each with their own pros and cons.
But it's when I say "What badge do Range Rovers have on them?" that they start getting annoyed
They get REALLY angry when they extol the virtues of their fully sick lifted ****e-lux with muddies, and it breaks down.
And Davo, please don't copyright that line, I want to use it!
