    Had a similar story recently.

Two blokes from work (one Landcruiser and one Hilux) bagging my LR for reliability for my upcoming trip to the Cape. Landcruiser workmate did the trip 3 weeks before me.

I managed up and back with a chip in the windscreen (on bitumen), broken fog light and a punctured tyre.

He cracked his block before he left, which almost ended his trip there and then, but got it fixed in time. On the way up he had to change out both g'box and t'case. On his way back was stuck in Normaton for a week because his harmonic balancer worked loose and shredded whatever sits close to the harmonic balancer. Plus 3 chips in his windscreen and two punctures, but they can happen to anyone.

I feel sorry for him having so many dramas. He still enjoyed his trip though.

When we got to Nolans Brook, well known to be a deep water crossing, we did everything 'by the book' before we tackled it........walked the crossing, assessed the bottom, checked the depth, determined the safest line to take and prepared the cars by fitting wading blinds and deflating our tyres because of the very soft sandy bottom which had been churned up the night before by a couple of young guys in Patrols doing it in two wheel drive.

We all drove though with relative ease which brought a comment from a bystander of, " The Landys made it look easy ", followed by a comment from another of, " yeah, but they took the easy line "............you just can't win can you !!!!

Some guys camped at Nolans had previously told us that one in five vehicles were not making it through, so it was a crossing to take seriously. The 'easy line' we took was just slightly to the side of the deepest boggiest bit. When you're literally hundreds of kms from help, I would refer to it as the 'sensible line' to take......whatever you're driving.

Some people have something to prove I suppose.......we don't !!!!

    Cheers, Murray

I have spent years enjoying taking a pretty stock truck somewhere these sort of people can't , and showing them up in front of their mates at the same time

All those mods will only help if you know where your wheels are meant to go in the first place.

I wonder how many people buy a 4WD with all the mods as their first off roader without any real experience of driving without all the assistance. Not starting off with lockers and the like means you have to put some thought into what you're doing rather than just putting your boot down and hoping for the best.
Agree, good to learn without the toys, glad I did it that way. Also gives you an understanding when to use lockers not just switch them on for the sake of it.

I've spent over 20 years proving stock LR's can tackle almost anything but even LR owners tell me they break diff's,axles, the motors are overstressed, can't bleed the fuel lines, too many electrics, wheels are too small etc etc, can't win. Pat

In the winch challenging in the uk We used to call them "Cheque Book Off Roaders"

Just buy a truck and throw a cheque book at it and that will make them the best
