    12v/electric cooking?

I am currently building myself an off road live-in camper (based on 6x6 defender) that I plan to take through the americas and africa.

I am looking at options for cooking, I intend to do the 'big' meals outside on a bbq/camp fire and have some kind of hot plate/cook top/stove inside (for tins of soup, instant noodles, a couple of rashers of bacon etc etc).

I am reluctant to go with a gas cook top, mainly because of the difficulty getting the gas, the lack of an international standard for fittings and the need for ‘proper’ gas piping, not to mention the extra risk of a live ignition source and potential flammable gas inside the truck.

How good are the 12v hot plates / microwaves that you see around, what is the power draw of these things?

How about an inverter and a 240v induction cook top? Something like this: Omega Portable Induction Cooktop OIC20B | Appliances Online

My intention is to have solar panels and 1 or 2 deep cycle auxiliary batteries.

I was also considering some kind of emersion heater to warm water - I would wire this to only be on when the engine is running, or something similar.

Anyone any thoughts or experiences of this?

Skip 12v. If you do the calculations, boiling water for tea will flatten an average battery.

Go dual fuel. Stoves, lights etc designed to run on unleaded petrol, shellite, dry cleaning fluid etc. or there are some different ones that use kerosine. They are the ones with the little hand pressure pumps.

I have 2 stoves and 2 lights. Can refill from small gerry can and 5 litres of fuel last for ever. Also safer than LPG. Mine are coleman.

I have been in the sticks with other campers with empty LPG cylinders and no where to fill. And you can carry spare parts and self repair. They last for ever too. My stove is 30 years old still works a treat.

or if the car is diesel and you can afford it, there are diesel stoves available, they are absurdly expensive. The early ones were slow to heat, but the latest ones are quite good, not as responsive as gas or duel fuel but on par with a household electric cooker.

I looked at a sailing yacht that had diesel aux engines, diesel stove, diesel hotwater, diesel space heating and diesel BBQ - brilliant 1 fuel!

On a previous 5 month trip, europe, russia, mongolia, middle east we just used a little trangia (actually had trouble getting hold of kerosine but that might have been language barrier) and a small collapsable charcoal bbq. We managed just fine.

Dual fuel might be the way to go. I am a big believer in KISS (keep it simple stupid).

Unfortunately cost is a factor, perhaps dual fuel in the short term and diesel in a few years if the price comes down.

This is the puppy I am going to get this weekend - Coleman Dual Fuel Powerhouse 2 Burner Stove - Rays Outdoors

As with most things here, it is over twice the price of what the US sell them for.

    Cheers - Gav

Had one of the Coleman duel fuels for years now and even though it runs on unleaded I always found it more reliable and easier to start using the Coleman fuel. Can't seem to find it anywhere these days, used to come in a 4lt tin can. I know you can use shellite as a substitute but this stuff has gone really expensive lately for some reason.

Another recommendation for a Coleman dual fuel. 5L of petrol would last you a long time.
