got my rego renewal, $811......significant increase over last year so I contacted Qld Transport just to be sure it was costed properly. "Yes sir, it is registered as a 6cyl vehicle, there is no category for a 5cyl vehicle" they must be making a ****load out of this. How many 5cyl vehicles are on the road these days?I tried to nicely question how my 2.5litre efficient 5cyl diiesel should fall in the same category as a 4.5litre six cyl petrol motor in a
LC100 but I got the usual bums rush. Maybe cando is getting rid of some of the ******* who make these stupid regulations. I feel really cheated that my nimble disco is looked upon like a lumbering landcruiser whale.

SA is the same...
$727.00 4 cyl or less (includes Rotary)
$842.00 5-6 cyl
$942.00 7cyl, V8 up to V16
So dont feel too bad...
In some places its based on vehicle Mass (WA I believe)
I'll stop complaining about the $560 a year I pay for the Rangie then... I didn't realise it was so much higher everywhere else...![]()

As far as I'm aware, 5 cylinder rego cost has been the same as 6 and 3 cylinder has been the same as 4 for many years. We had a 5 cylinder caravelle van 15 years ago that was classed as a 6 in Qld. Has probably been like that a lot longer.
The whole idea of rego being charged according to number of cylinders is silly, it should either go by weight, number of seats, engine capacity, something sensible. Or charge according to class of vehicle, ie car, truck etc.
My 6 cylinder holden powered series 3 lwb on lpg uses less fuel and is cheaper to run and more environmentally friendly than most 4 cylinder cars including our 4 cylinder nissan x trail. I can't see how it is fair for me to pay the same as a 6 cylinder car without lpg.
I guess they could charge halfway between 4 and 6 but that means one more rego level and the current system is simpler.
if you read the proper rules and not just the simple ones they read Up to.
in theory if they wanted to be stupidly perverse they could charge you 8 pot rego because your in the upto 8 cylinders bracket.
Cant wait to see how they go when I turn up with electrics yeah mate no cylinders.

In Victoria the lack of counting skills was seen as a problem years ago, VICROADS couldn't find employable staff with those skills.
So for cars the number of cylinders or engine capacity means nothing.
They all cost the same, what you pay is based on being either suburban or rural (for the insurance component), less any concessions you may have (health care card etc).
For motorcyles there is still a capacity component, which is and has always been stupid.
