ITALIANS living in major cities could be forgiven for feeling a little on edge.
- Drugs detected in the air, but not at major levels
- Marijuana, caffeine signifcantly higher in winter
According to Italy's Institute of Atmospheric Pollution Research, there are detectable levels of cocaine in the air of eight major cities.
The report followed the findings in 2006 that cocaine was present in Roman air.
Now it's been discovered that cocaine also occupies airspace in Palermo, Bologna, Florence, Turin, Milan, Verona and Naples.
The levels aren't significant enough to alter one's consciousness simply from breathing in the air, but the data could be used to shape health policies.
Marijuana and caffeine levels are higher during winter; researchers believe people may be self-medicating due to seasonal affective disorder.
Which leads us to wonder about Australian cities and their cocaine presence.
Sydney, anyone?

If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.
When I so the title of the thread I was thinking about Nimbin![]()
There would have to be a significantly greater use of smokable cocaine (crack) in Australia to overcome the effects of the eucalyptus already at measurable levels in many parts of Australia.
Remember drug users in Oz have a greater tendendency to inject their powders when compared to the US and Europe.
You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
Well I haven't heard of much of this stuff floating about in the air, but in Bolivia and the border parts of Argentina, folks makes a nice green tea out of a few leaves in a tea pot. As my dear old mum would say "Good for your fagasites mate!
In fact good for calming a bad guts ache, altitude sickness at about 18000 ft, or even chewed on a tooth to ease toothache, its the local remedy for much that can ails you.
If you watch the clip the gal ( Michaela Chauque) in the video at one point is making a morning brew. The leaves are sold in the market place by the truck load like lettuce!

ps I spend 1 year in Bolivia testing Leyland trucks back in the late seventies, enjoyed every minute of it!
I remember the book Papillon, by Henri Charriere, [ which since has been seen as mostly fiction], and the movie, with Steve McQueen. Charriere was running , trying to escape, and kept chewing coca leaves to keep him going. I can only assume it works, Bob [ I have a cd with South American pipe music, for the nights I can't get to sleep. I enjoy the music very much]

Oh it works alright.
Going back on my year in Bolivia I had driven a Leyland Marathon demo truck up from Montevideo. I was met on the outskirts of Sucre by our agent. As we chatted and waited for two of my mates to turn up with two more trucks I noticed someone moving about in a river ravine about 500 ft below. I could see the bloke down there was tending to a citrus grove he had around the small creek and a billabong at the end. Then a few minutes later he started climbing the ravine walls like a mountain goat with two huge sacks of oranges and grapefruits tied to a leather headband wrapped around his head.
Climbing over the rock wall we bought some fruit from him and during the money exchange he spit out a clump of well chewed leaves like a chaw of tobacco.
Out of a pouch he rolled up some more leaves like a cigar stub stuffed in behind his teeth and set off to market with his fruit! Crikey like a human beast of burden!
I suppose after a few chaws you would be feeling no pain!
Yes the Andean sound is captivating, the same Micaela Chauque was featured on Argey Tv a while back on Echos of my Land:-

The gal doing the introduction "La Solie" Solidad Pastorutti is a famous Argy folk singer in her own right. The last time I saw these two was at a folk festival in Cosquin in Northern Argentina.
Enjoy the music
