A Royal Australian Regiment (RAR) soldier is being awarded the Victoria Cross - Australia's highest military honour - for bravery during the war in Afghanistan.
The medal is being presented to Corporal Daniel Keighran by Governor-General Quentin Bryce at Government House in Canberra this morning.
Corporal Keighran, of the Brisbane-based 6th Battalion RAR, is the third Australian to receive the VC while serving in Afghanistan, but the first regular soldier.
The two previous Afghan war recipients - Corporal Mark Donaldson VC and Corporal Ben Roberts-Smith VC - were both members of the special forces..
Before today 98 Australian soldiers, in a line dating back to the Boer War of 1899-1902, had received the VC.
All Victoria Crosses are cast from the same cannon, captured from Russian forces during the Crimean War, and the one which is being awarded today only arrived from the jewellers in London this morning.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott, and Vietnam VC winner Keith Payne were all present at today's ceremony.
