    How good is a Kluger?

I'm planning a simpson crossing next year. A mate of mine is interested in coming but he has a Kluger about a year old. Is it capable of doing this type of trip or would it be a liability? I would doubt it has the range and Im not confident that it would handle the sand that well?

    Opinions?

    thanks

Is it just me or does kluger sound like a dirty word?

how good of a mate is your mate? If a good mate the worst case scenario = he shows you up with a kluger!

If theres a few motors going, you can take turns pulling the kluger out.
If your motor breaks down the kuldge can tow you home.
If the kludge breaks down, leave it in the bush - no big loss there.

I say give it go and let us know how it turns out

I know little about the Kluger, but as far as actual progress on sand goes, that depends mainly on tyre pressure and the driver, so from that point of view it should work. The questions that do need answering, which I can't, are the following:-

    1. Is it sufficiently rugged and reliable that several days of offroad driving, possibly in high temperatures, are very unlikely to result in critical failures? And what evidence do you have to support this?

    2. Since it certainly does not have sufficient range, can it carry sufficient fuel without overloading? Plan on at least double normal consumption and add a safety margin of 50% to cover extra distance that may be necessary to go round alternative routes.

    3. With sufficient fuel for the trip, is there enough remaining load capacity for it to be worth taking? Do not overload any vehicles on a desert crossing - it greatly increases fuel consumption and probability of mechanical and tyre failure, as well as making it more likely to get stuck.

Simply - it will struggle all the the way and be a PIA from the first decent dune.

if he can drive and dig it will do it ,I would rather be in my 130 than a klugger , for fuel usage check out the Mt Dare website accurate figures for most vehicles . camp at Dalhousie springs the generatorat Mt Dare is not the best bedtime companion

Have you both got a weekend to spare before the trip?
Why not head over to Big Desert for a weekend.
I'd sugest Milmed Rock Track and Thomsom Peaks Lookout will soon sort the abilities.
    Cheers, Kyle

If a Subaru Outback and Forrester can do it, can't see why a Kluger can't, it will have the power for climbing dunes, lets face it low range is not used very often, if at all, it's biggest disadvantage will be being petrol, which means high fuel usage.

Blimey. In August 1996 I crossed the Simpson in a group of four 2WD P76's. We towed each other out as needed, carried plenty of fuel and had a ball. The Klunker will be no problem if prepared and driven properly.

Back in the 1980s there was a well prepared Denning Coach that was used to regularly cross the Simpson.
It isn't the Canning Stock Route
