I fitted a later S1 or early S2 (not sure) roller box to my '55. you have to fit the steering wheel too, and you lose the centre h/l dip switch.
For me it was well worth it, really sharp steering for what was then my daily driver.

Alternatively, any competent machinist could make a nut to fit your steering shaft.

I got a new nut from Steering Services in the UK. Google them.
Cost 140 quid plus 70 quid freight.
Got it made 10 thou OS in the body OD and tried it on a few shafts till I found one it felt good on then turned the OD down to fit the best box.

will do a full re-build of the box at an significant cost because you have to ship it over and back. Unfortunately they don't ship parts (or at least they didn't previously)

The later series one boxes (54) have a longer column which makes the driving position smaller.

The best option is to find a box that had the later steel worm and nut replacement installed. These seem to be more durable than the bronze nut style and are externally indistinguishable. But it does mean you have to go looking for donors.

If your box has an alloy housing, make sure you don't have a broken housing where it rivits onto the column.

You should also check that the bearings on the cross shaft are not worn, these will increase the slop and are easy to replace with undersize bearings to match the wear in the shaft.

(BTW: According to a mate and expert 1st class machinist, the 5 start of the bronze nut seems impossible to reproduce with a CNC because the lathe is always reacting to the tension and the threads are usually unsuccessful. Steering Services UK have a brooch for cutting the thread, but have said that once it wears out they won't be making another.

The steel on steel are a 2 start square cut thread, I do believe they would be reproduceable, but being an automotive steering assembly have to be certified.)

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
