Scary moment on general grabbers
Hi everyone,
I had a pretty big moment today while I was 4wding in glasshouse mountains. I was going down a smooth gravel road, a pretty solid surface with a bit of dust. I run medium worn stock size Duellers on the front and near new 32 inch general grabbers on the back of my 110 defender ute.
I was driving along the road at about 60 following a mate in his rangie and I went round a long right hand corner and the back end just slid out, no warning just the back end trying to overtake the front. I started putting left lock on and rolled off the road into some grass and slowed down gently with the brakes.
The centre diff was unlocked and it was in high range.
I had noticed that lately the back end was feeling a bit looser than it did when i was on the duellers.
Is this down to different sized tyres on the front and back or just the grabbers being slippery?
Cheers,
Joe

What dia are the front tyres? On a full time 4x4 like a fender they should be the same front and rear . As for the general grabbers I can't say if there good or not haveing not used them. But I doubt a diffrance in dia will cause you to do a Broady. More like a tyre pressure issue ie over inflated or simply it was just slippery lose gravel

I'd go with the miss-matched tyres.
Also, what were you doing with the throttle? Did you have the power on or did you lift off?

I had all tyres at about 45 psi.
Throttle stayed on until I'd over corrected and I'd found a nice runoff to try and aim at.
Ill be getting the other tyres on payday, just tossing up whether or not to stay with the grabbers.

i take it you are driving the single cab.......if so 45PSI sounds high
if you were unloaded than yes the back end would unload pretty easy going around a corner on a dirt road, keep in mind all the little rocks acting like marbles
i always engage CDL as soon as i'm on dirt roads....

I'm guessing 235/85's all round ?
If so, too much pressure for gravel/dirt, as the boys above have said.
I'd be a little concerned about a mis-match in tyre diameter though, I've seen a difference in new 235/85's vs old 750/16's result in 1" difference in diameter and cooked t/case fluid. (it was black and stunk)
Luckily the t/case diff was ok.

45PSI way to high and you say you diff size tyres on as well thats not good kick them down to 38psi and see how that is lots to look at ie did you have load in the back as well.....
What pattern are they AT OR AT2 ????

Your tyre pressures are way to high..
A 110 SC will be so light in the back unloaded... You need to run lighter pressures..
Even a fully laden 110 Wagon would get tail happy (I've been there many times).
You need to match your tyres too, the worn ones will be a fair bit different in diameter to the new ones...
Personally, I would of stayed with the Duellers

There may be another element at play as well. Does your Defender have traction control? Mine is an 08' 110 and I've long since learnt to pull the TC/ABS fuse before going on gravel roads. I'm currently swanning around central and far north QLD and the 110 behaves much better without the t/c engaged when on unsealed roads.
