I will qualify my comment. I do not regard a 10-15 litre tank to be a large tank and if planted up would be suitable for a Siamese fighter. I regard a large tank as 150 litres plus.

Yeah I don't consider 10 to 15 to be considered large either that was considered and exceptable minimum, I wasnt recommending a large tank but I do know of people that have them in a large tanks was all I was saying:)
I used to keep fighters as a kid. Love them, my favourite aquarium fish. I've kept these in 20 litre tanks and likewise 130 litre tanks with gold fish! SFF's are not communal fish, but they are tame and trainable - I used to have one jump out of the water to knock food off my fingers when I fed it. One day one of my Lionhead gold fish nibbled some food off my finger also which the SFF took exception to and then took an eye out of the Lionhead. The Lionhead lived for long time after that with one eye too. Having kept them with gold fish and a variety of tropicals (as they should), I haven't come across any that are good communal fish, not even with Paradise fish who are from the same family and just as cranky.
Anyway, if the water is too cool the SFF will drop its colours, and likewise if it is stressed it will drop its colours. These are indicators for you. They dont need a lot of attention, water changes etc and you will probably find that too much servicing of the tank (as specified in written material) will kill them in no time and only do low % water changes. Feeding them too much will kill them too, just what they can eat in 5mins every 2nd day, you can see when their bellys are full. SFF's will eat flakes, but they don't like them, even tropical or SFF flake. What worked really well for me was feeding them freeze dried blood worms from the container - they love them and they live well on them.
My fish love blood worm too and hated a frozen community fish food fussy buggers
What I do not like about petshops selling Siamese Fighting Fish is that many have them in small containers that are designed to be a desk ornament - now if looked after they can survive OK but what the Pet Shop normally neglects to tell the unknowing buyer is that they are a tropical fish (yes they are tolerant to cooler temps) and really require heating in colder climates.
They sell like hot cakes here in Canberra but then the fish kark it in winter when inside temps can be colder than your fridge.

I agree, those little cups are just cruel to keep them in and they need to be kept in tanks with lids also. Very few look healthy in the cups and they do need to be in a tank that is kept at least at warmed temperatures.
However in Thailand they are bred in whiskey bottles - they can live in quite small containers as long as environmental conditions are maintained.
G'day All,
Here I was thinking that asking a question about goldfish on AULRO might be pushing things a bit far - then I found a link about Japanese Fighting Fish :)
Okay I was given an aquarium with two goldfish of indeterminate age and history. The gold fish are both around 7 cm in length. I was also given a Chinese food container of fish food pellets. The label just has the description 5 M Fish Pellets.
My question is how many of these pellets should be enough to keep the two fish well fed. Years ago I used a pinch of granules or flakes - pellets are new to me and the container has no recommended rates described anywhere. How many times a day should these pellets be used? When I had fish years ago I use to just feed them a couple of pinches once per day. I am not sure how the granules/flakes compare to the rate of 5M Fish pellets.
The size of the tank is about 500 mm long 150 mm wide and about 300 mm high
Any information would be much appreciated.
Kind Regards
Lionel
I cant find anything on them..how big are the pellets?
feeding once a day or every second day should be sufficent as for quantity I'm not sure if you are unsure I would recommend you just go out and buy new food.
Can't you ask the person you got them from?
atm my fish tank is a night light and that is about it. I think when I do start getting fish I will start cheap and easy and work my way up to more exotic fish. aka hello guppies
