I officially give up on Japanese fighting fish

Over the past couple of years I have been trying to keep Japanese fighting fish I officially give up on them. My latest - lasted 3 days. My record is 6 or 8 months. I know they only have alife span of about 12 - 18 months but I can not get near that. I have read numerous articles / books about them and doing what is suggested is the right thing but does not work for me.

My big fish tank has now been changed from a cold water tank to a tropical tank - first time with tropical setup so anxious to see how that will go.
I have some Silver Dollars, neons and some others which the name escapes me - Platius I think.. I think the Silver dollars have already eatin a couple of the neons. Tropical fish appear to be alot more aggressive feeders when compared to the cold water fish.

Grab some guppies. They breed like flies and you'll have a tankfull in no time.

Maybe you need Siamese Fighting fish rather than Japanese Fighting Fish.

But you are correct - the Fighting Fish do not normally last long - they do get picked on by other fish - nipping their fins.

I have the opposite issue with goldfish, they start out at about 10c size and the largest is now 7inches tip to bottom of tail V. Have to upgrade tank size.

I had them in their own tank.
They are not strong swimmers either.
Yes other fish do like thier "plumage"
In the past - as a teenager I did have them in a normal tank with other fish and they survived okay - but at that time I did not know what type of fish they were.
What annoyed me the most was I was following all the correct procedures with my cold water fish and had okay survival rates where my brother with his small tank that all he did was feed the fish and never changed water or the filters - heck you could hardly see into the tank from all the algae growth on the sides of the tank had better survival rates than me.

be careful with the silver dollars fish, if they get spooked badly enough they tend to lay on their sides and you then have to lift them up and make them swim
they do tend to grow into to a rather big fish
just a heads up have fun

silver dollars and platys are both aggressive fish - If you have any neons left in a month you are doing well.

I used to keep and breed natives as part of ANGFA (Australian and New Guinea Fish Association) - great fun and an easy hobby as long as you do your PM regularly!

same here, "dale" will soon be needing his own tank.
