When I was heavily into climbing 15 or so years ago, Kathmandu was good gear. I still have a very old backpack, extra long goretex sleeping bag and goretext jacket. The fleece gear would last 5 years. These days I have to agree with the comment above. The cut and fit of most of their clothing has gone out the window, material quality is down and construction a sad contrast to what they used to do. Agree that Macpac, Mont and Mountain Designs are still good.
another vote for Mount designs. Im happy with my 2 rain jackets from them...wait for a sale, they are always on.
Macpac stuff has always been great.
I think Katmandu is ok, but overpriced city type marketing.
Thanks for all the comments - keep them coming.
All our backpacks and day packs (and some clothing/jacklets) are katmandu, and we have been happy with them. But the newest is >5 years old.
I have noticed the Peter Storm brand in the UK seems good value, any feedback?
I'm a big fan of Mountain Hardware.
Keep an eye out for Berghaus too; will be hitting Australia next year through a new distributor, and aimed at being closer to online/overseas prices at a retail level.
James.
I bought some Peter Storm thermals over twenty years ago and while they've shrunk, I can still use them in a pinch.
They weren't up with Mont, PP, MD or Macpac/Fairydown IMO back then, but good value for what they were.
What they are like no I have no idea.
Berghaus used to be a good UK brand too.
I noticed an English friend of mine had a Berghaus jacket when she arrived here a few months back, and she'd been running a string of ski resorts in France.
If you are after a sleeping bag/s I can highly recommend One Planet.
My semi-custom mummy bag is over fifteen years old and still brilliant.
I honestly can't recall what it cost at the time, I think it might have been pretty pricey as it packs so compactly yet lofts so well, but it's so good and has lasted so well it was money well spent.
I've always used a silk inner with it too.
Macpac were also excellent and what I was going to buy at the time until I fell for the one I bought.

Awesome service and a 24 hour phone helpline.
I buy flannel lined jeans from them for winter.
For Winstopper/Rain Jackets, I have found Snowgum to be excellent quality for the price. My wife has a paddy pallin goretex storm jacket which has seen extensive service for the last 7 years and looks as good as they day I bought it for her - on special, I couldn't afford it otherwise.
All of the stores seem to have big sales on at the moment, I have bought a bit from here and there![]()
swazii gear from NZ is very popular with the high contry deer hunters.
i have had their gear for about 10 years and its top stuff.
