One thing i have learnt about Land Rover owners.....we can be a bit too precious at times.

I have had wonderful trips in

Toyotas
Subaru
VWs
Land Rovers
Kingswoods

and good forbid

.....even a Lada Niva.

All this crap about "this vehicle is better than that" gets a bit tiring .....most of us never us the full capabilities anyway.:angel:

Horror stories from ever make and model, but I loved em all.

I think you may be living in the past. The KJ if anything has steering that is too direct, and while the rear springs seem too hard, it certainly doesn't lurch ( note spelling) all over the road.
Maybe the old leaf spring ones did, but I have never driven one.

I have a Jeep too...

A few months ago, I bought a '99 Jeep Cherokee 'Orvis'. It has the 4.0, auto and as they wanted less for it than a new set of tyres for the Freebee, I bought it as a winter hack.

Even for 'Top of the range', the interior is basic, it has a drink problem that would put Oliver Reed to shame and the handling is awful!! I don't mind them but it is an acquired taste.

As for the 'Merc influence', I'm not sure if it extended much beyond Jeep using Merc diesel engines (The Yanks have never really been known for their Diesel engines;)).

Some would say this about LR's, especially Defenders :D

Seriously if you don't want to be tempted away from the Land Rover fold then don't test drive a new Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland diesel.

For around $50k cheaper than a specked up D4 HSE (Luxury) you can buy a similar spec Overland diesel that is faster, as economical, as quite, drives really well, comes standard with an e-diff and has a much higher degree of safety options fitted including blind spot warning and adaptive cruise control. Tows the same weight as a D4 (3.5 ton) and has the same ball weight limit of 350kg. Not quite the same payload but adequate for most situations.

Nor quite as refined as a D4 and more the size of a RRS but for the money it is great value and is very tempting. Few people have had reliability issues with them so far here in Australia considering how many have been sold from what I have read on other forums. The new VM diesel (Fiat) is great with plenty of power and mid way through next year it gets updated with an 8 speed box and even more qizmo's standard. The platform it is built on will be the next generation one used for the up coming Merc ML, so it is in front of Merc not following for a change.

You can order a new one from the factory for around $650 extra with what Jeep call the Adventure Pack 2, which comes standard with 18" wheels, instead of 20's, just about full underbody allow bash plate protection and lower diff gears for off road usage all Overlands come with air suspension and Terrain Response similar to a D3/4/RRS's.

It would seem the story's of old of a bad handling gas guzzling piece of doggy doo are now just as irrelevant as they are for new Land Rovers (Defenders excepted of course :wasntme:)

As I've said the pick of the crop to check out is the Overland diesel, that is if you can find one in a dealer that isn't sold.

He took it on a bit of spin in the mud.
Apparently part of the front bumper is removable to improve approach angle when offroading. (Great Idea)

This part of the bumper protects the lens for the radar sonar active cruise control thingy*. Scratched the hell out of it. New one costs $$$$.

Out with the plastic buffing compound and some patience.:angel:

Yeah it's a bloody nice looking vehicle. I'd have one. (Who's got $80K to lend me?:p)
