Yup! he was for real, I remember seeing him when I was a kid, just after WW11,he was an old man by then.I have a vague memory that he used to sell evening newspapers in Queen street Brisbane in the early 50's
P38arover may also remember him selling the "Telegraph" at the tram safety zones, in Queen St "Paper--Telle--City--Final"
It was a great afterschool job high primary (G8) and early H/school @ / per paper, (remember one could get an apprenticeship at 14).
There was a dwarf had a paper stand in Queen St. on the Edward St. corner outside Nat Green Pharmacy. Everyone reckoned he was Mr.XXXX. This was in the 50's-60's. He would have been the right age group to be the one at the races. Others reckoned Paddy Fitzgerald, the chairman of XXXX Brewery for decades, was the model for Mr.XXXX. Paddy was a wrinkled little bloke so he could have been the model.
