Depending on where you want to go Hema are pretty good but fairly small scale, they can be purchased on line.
Problem is map shops are pretty few, and far between now MapCentre in Parramatta (Sydney) is about the only one I know of now (in Sydney)

If you want very detailed maps such as the ordinance survey type (army), then topographical maps are what you want, but may only cover a small area depending on the scale you choose.

Hi,
Not sure of other states, but from my experience in Tasmania, the old paper ordinance maps are now fast becoming redundant.
I have a reasonable selection of 1:250,000 1:100,000 and 1:25,000 of Tas and these are quite good for over views and finding what used to be in an area. I also have the full set of these maps as seamless digital images for use with Ozi Explorer.

The digital Oztoppo maps that I bought for my garmin can be viewed on the laptop and routes, tracks etc can be sent to the GPS.
These maps have much more off road information than the ordinance maps, even down to shack owner's tracks, and they are up-to-date, but the ordinance maps can show useful older information. e.g. that what is now a road, was once a railway line, or the old road is now re-aligned.

Along with Google maps and satellite images, it is possible to distil the information you need/want from all these sources into a usable form.

I'm trying to compile a list of topo-maps for different gps software, and was wondering where you sourced the TasMap maps for Ozi?

The main source of TasMap digital images I've been able to unearth only releases the maps in .tif format. Tifs can be easily converted to Ozi and other mapping software format so that is not a big obstacle. The main downside is the cost of the imagery is prohibitive for an individual: $1100 for 1:25K and $275 for 1:100K.

The 1:25,000 topographic paper maps in NSW (made by Department of Lands) are still current. The data used to make these maps, is used to make all the other digital and paper maps.

Hema is the exception which has done their own field survey. BUT these maps do not show topography.

The map shop in Parramatta sells a Raster (digital) copy of all the 1:25,000 NSW maps for $275. On my wish list.

So everyone is moving to electronic maps.... I can sort of see why, but I dont often carry the laptop with me and my navigator is an old 3" tomtom (it's a hand-me-down) its so old and sad that the battery has died and I have to have it plugged into power just to turn it on. Works good enough for town to town stuff and navigating within towns.
